Until very recently I had set my sights on buying a used caterham race car and having a go at a few races. Last week however I was told by caterham that new race cars with the Sigma engine will no longer be available moving forward. This will obviously have a knock on effect on the race series from Academy upwards, however I have been unable to get a response from the championship coordinator about what will happen to the race series..

I obviously don’t want to buy a car that will not be eligible after a year or two.

Can anyone shed any light?

Buy a used Sigma powered Caterham and race it in the Grads or Toyo Tyres series.

Plenty of places to race a used Caterham race car. As Hustle Russell says, There is the Graduates club, the Toyo 7s race series and there is also the CSCC’s Magnificent 7s series, and I think that 750mc and various regional series accept Locaterfields although you generally have to race in mixed grids with hatches and salons etc in most of those I think.
I would not worry about buying a Sigma engined race car (or indeed a K Series or Vauxhall one) as still plenty of spares around and they still hold their value.
I bought a K series engined car (out of production by several years by the time I bought it) and have no qualms about racing it in Mag 7s. To be honest, a Sigma engined car should be a very good buy as eligible for all of the series mentioned here, and likely to be for some time to come.

A recent Sigma engined Caterham will be eligible in the Caterham Graduates for many, many, years to come. For example the non VCT Sigma cars which were discontinued by Caterham after 2013 still race in the Graduates (in Supersport spec) as the Sigmax class. The Classic class for cars from the 1995 to 2000 Academy years was only discontinued by the Graduates at the end of last year.

You may find that the spec in the Caterham orginsed championships moves on fairly quickly but there will be plenty of other options.

Don't worry, buy yourself a car and join in.

In the Caterham series, priority has always been given to people coming up the ladder rather than those trying to enter with their own car. It will also take a few years for the new Academy spec to morph into the Roadsport / Tracksport / Supersport specs or their equivalent names.

As everyone has said, but a Sigma VVT (or non VVT) car and you will have plenty of places to race.
