Looking for 1A/1B wet weather tyres. Trying to find info online is quite hard.

Found Nankang AR1's to be the quickest tyre in the dry, for my car/style (lightweight MR2).

AR1 copes OK when the tracks damp or drying, but I need something that can take over when the AR1 is no longer working - which as a rule of thumb is when you start getting spray.

Currently have Rainsport 3's, and whilst decent, I find it has to be really wet before they are one of the quicker 1A/1B tyres, by which time it tip toe time anyway.

What recommendations are out there?

Must come with a 15 and 16 size option

Cheers

Michelin Pilot Sport 4 available in 205/55/16. You can't really get better than that in a 16" tyre size.

God, not familiar with how this forum works, and dodgy phone signal hasn't helped either. Made a right mess.

I had pilot super sports on a road car, and they worked well on track, and on the road - but only in short bursts as they started melting. I assume the PS4 overheats too when the track starts to dry?

Have to agree with the Rainsport, seems to be a lot of hype around them. But as you say it has to be torrential for them to have an advantage.

R888R handle intermediate conditions pretty well vs. their dry performance with the pattern and relatively soft compound, The Toyo R1R is also wet weather biased but a strong performer.

Do you still get R1R's.

I found a few topics discussing this when searching, but most were years old.

R1R always gets mentioned but availability seems an issue

If it's full wet with spray and not much heat getting into the tyres then any decent 1a road tyre will demolish a semi slick. When the spray starts to disappear and water doesn't need to be move then I'd just be wanting the 1b tyre that you're happy with and can "switch on" as quickly as possible.

There will be a significant crossover zone and it your size the Pilot Sport 4 will be the best option to retain some ability as it dries out.

PS4 or PS4S? Would Cups or Supersports be possible options too?

On the scale of 1 to 10, where 1 is dry, and 10 is the point where red flags come out with rain

I find my AR1's work till maybe 3 then rapidly drop off, the Rainsports are only "quick" relative to others after maybe 7, and will definitely overheat at below 3.

However "wet" track conditions most often are in the 3-7 range.

I mean a scenario, 10-15 laps, track conditions are a 5-6 at start, but dry line will probably improve to a 2 or 3 by finish.

Yokohama A052s were faster than Rainsport 3s in these conditions last Friday.

Wish I could get PS4 in the right sizes and really wish R1Rs were still available.

You wouldn't be able to get anything but a PS4 in a 16" size. I wouldn't want Cups or Supersports as a wet weather option anyway..

Limited tyre experience, but racing in a Toyo-limited series-

R888R can be pretty competent up to about ‘damp’- by the time it’s wet enough for spray they’re hopeless.

R1R is great in the wet, but no longer available.

T1R has been superseded by Proxes Sport and TR1 (yeah, me neither). No experience of either of the latter but I’ll be using the former for the wet this year, not run yet but my previous experience suggests they’re pretty average. I’m only running them due to a loophole in the regs, else I’d have given the Proxes Sport a bash as they seem pretty handy!

Definitely.

They'll possibly even be faster up to a point of torrential-ness . Once you've burnt through the RS3's, it might be worth considering Michelin PS3 too - they use them in quite a few race series.

Most definately worth getting but you should satisfy yourself that they are list B and not list C.

1B is fine.

Allowed to run any 1b or 1a tyre.

On the scale of 1 to 10, with 1 being dry and 10 being the threshold of red flags.

What operating window is the R1R the right 1a/b tyre to be on?

I think he meant make sure that R1Rs are not now on List 1C.

In answer to your question I would say 3-7 is their optimum range but you can run them full dry on light cars without losing much time.

Thank you for help on this thread.

I went with R1R's, found old stock, admittedly a 2016 manufacture date, but not too concerned at just over £200 for the 4.

Sound exactly what I am looking for.

Cracking wet tyres, good price too. Very lucky boy if there’s still stock in your size!
