Hi everyone, first time having to get a car rebuilt from scratch for its Historic Technical Passport, and hoping on getting some words of wisdom or advice from the friendly lot on PH to hopefully make the paperwork side a bit easier.

I'm happy with the homologation paperwork and what we can do that side (we will be building the car to Group 1b spec), but struggling to get my head around the Appendix K and what we are allowed to do with the cage.

The original cage in period was 6 point, so if I understand it correctly needs to stay that way, but can extra bars be added without causing issues when it comes to getting the HTP inspection done? I have tried speaking to the HTP inspector but it ends up just raising more questions, and would like more black and white answers hehe

The easiest way to go seems to be buy a bolt in 6 point cage from Safety Devices as that is already MSA Homologated, but really it would be nice to have a welded in cage with crossed door bars etc to add to the safety perspective, but of course we don't want to build the car into a way that makes it difficult to get the paperwork.

The regular cars we race are 'modern' so we normally just send them to Custom Cages and let them do what they like with them, but I have also read issues with Custom Cages not building historic cages exactly to Appendix K spec even when asked, and again causing paperwork issues.

Here is the Safety Devices cage (I have emailed to ask if the do a weld in version that is still homologated)

And here is the Dolomite cage on Custom Cages website (which would definitely not be legal)

Apologies for the long post. If anyone is interested I would be happy to post up pictures of the car once we get started on it, and obviously if anyone here is experienced with racing Dolomites any info would be great!

Ken Clarke Motorsport would be a good place to start asking some serious questions. Ken has been involved in saloon car racing for longer than he cares to admit and done most of it if not all of it. http://historictouringcars.org/

Hmmm, not sure if this breaches forum rules as an advert. I've known Ken for 25 plus years since my dad used to race against him. I don't know anything about Triumph Dolomites but when it comes to racing them Ken will. I personally don't know diddly about them or roll cages in particular so at the end of the day it is up to you to make your own judgement. Apologies to the mods if this reply oversteps posting rules.

Thankyou, I will give him a shout thumbup

I don't think it will breach any forum rules, as its a recommendation rather than an advert smile

Your best bet is to get in touch with an HTP inspector and run it past them as they will need to submit the application to the FIA anyway. MSA should be able to put you in touch with your nearest one.

I had issues with a cage I fitted to a mk1 Cortina rally car when I applied for its historic rally equivalent of the HTP. It wasn’t that it was welded in it was an additional brace they didn’t like. Had to cut it out in the end, a pain in a freshly painted car. The brace came as part of a historic cage from Custom Cages. Came to a compromise and made it bolt in/bolt out depending on type of rally being entered.

It’s all about being ‘in period’ which is a bit of a joke as in period the only raced with a single main hoop at best!

I was going to suggest Ken Clarke as well. I have a feeling that he was involved in BL Motorsport and then TWR back in the day.
