Hi,

My otherwise reliable older DL1 mk2 + VIDEO4 setup has gone caput this weekend at Brands. The VIDEO4 looks fried (no lights, despite power going to it); the DL1 refuses to log to a compact flash card.

Was thinking about upgrading anyway, as predictive lap timing was only sector based - and i'd love real-time timeslip, but as always - budget isn't unlimited.

So questions are:
  • Does the DL1 Club *definitely* do real time timeslip? (i.e. i can see in real time whether i am up or down on my best lap or best sector - how a simulator would do it). The website says yes, but then you can read it also as only being avalable on the much more expensive DL1 Club
  • Rather than get another Video4 (would need to be used as they don't sell or support them anymore), it looks time to get a GoPro. Which model is best? The Hero7 is expensive, but if the difference in image stabilisation is materially better than the Silver or lower I'd go for it
Can't go AIM as may be suggested because of the cost, and because I'd lose out on overlaying the 3.5 years of data from me, and also the quickest drivers.

Hi,

I use a DL1 Club with a DASH2 display and GoPro Hero 6 together, and the predictive lap timing function works all round the lap. You need to adjust the configuration to give you the function you want, but it’s pretty simple and described on the Race Technology website below:

http://www.race-technology.com/wiki/index.php/DASH...

The GoPro doesn’t connect to the camera, so you have to load the video file into the analysis and synchronise them yourself. I believe the latest v10 of the Race Tech analysis software will sync them automatically based on GPS data, but I haven’t worked out how to do that yet...

To get the auto data syncing to work with the GoPro you need to turn on the GPS logging before you record. It uses the GPS time logged on both the DL and camera to sync things up. Not sure why but no one seems to mention you have to have the GPS turned on before you record!

Here is how from the GoPro website. https://community.gopro.com/t5/Cameras/How-can-I-t...

Incidentally I recently discovered Race Technology have made a version of there analysis software which accepts this GoPro logged data direct.

It’s not as good quality and you don’t get a predictive laptime screen. But it might be good enough if you’re on a tight budget. It’s also really fast as all you need is the video file - all the data is stored in the MP4!

Maybe a GoPro, this analysis software and say Harry’s Laptimer in your phone (for the predictive in-car stuff) could be a cost effective new starting point to data?

I’ve done a quick video on this to show how it works (https://youtu.be/DTQple0c1cc) but it’s a pretty nice new option. In the comments section I’ve also linked a sample video RT gave me to try things out so if you wanted to experiment before buying a GoPro you can see for yourself what it would be like.

Best of luck!

I've got a DL1 Club, Dash4 Pro, and a GoPro Hero 3 White. I bought the DL1 -> GoPro lead that's supposed to work on the idea that you plug the lead in to the GoPro and when you started recording it turns on the camera and records that too. It worked for a while but then one day just stopped working, not sure why. Also it's supposed to make it easier to load the video in on top of the data with there being an option to sync based on the starting the video with the lead but it's never synced properly for me. Also the link cable only worked on Hero 1, 2, and Hero 3 white so all the new cameras are out.

Honestly it was a bit of a let down. I'm rebuilding the car at the moment and will set it all up again to see if it works this time, but who knows.

The only way to sync videos with RT stuff is using a GPS GoPro. The GoPro cable stuff doesn't really work.

As mentioned, the GoPro with the RT Analysis software becomes a reasonable GPS datalogger in it's own right. Because the GoPro has 18Hz GPS, it's actually pretty accurate, too - I compared my laptimes calculated from GoPro data in RaceRender3 vs official race times and it was all within a 10th.

The harry's idea for predictive lap times doesn't really work well without an external GPS, though. Predictive timing is the one thing you need high frequency GPS for.

The new AiM Solo does a good job of it for relatively little cash.
