First car for club racing and parts?
Discussion
Wondering if anyone can help.
I am currently looking at starting club racing (750 mc would be my preference) but will be starting out in hill climbs and I am in need of a car. I am looking at a BMW e46 330 ci and was wondering if anyone could give me names of any parts they have used for track or know of any such a suspension components, drivetrain and engine. If you know of any cars that would be better around the same price (3k to 5k) please put them in along with any parts names. A few notes, it has to be rwd and fairly easy to work on. the 3 cars ive had my eye of are the 330 ci, a 944 and an s2000
Many thanks, Fraser

first of all find a series you want/can afford to compete in then find the car which is most competitive in the class of your chosen series.Unless of course its a one make series. Ina 330ci for example you could be in the same hill climb class mitsi evo which can have loads more power than a 330ci. Also what series after you've done hill climbing do you run a 330ci in? I don't mean to be argumentative or discouraging I'm just asking.
I'd say a 330 is a decent choice. Don't bother messing with the engine, keep it standard and tweak the weight to suit the power/weight classes that 750 run in Roadsports and Enduro or they also host for the BMWCC Championship which is getting good grids this season.
It would also be eligible for MSVT Trackday Trophy/Championship if you wanted to go elsewhere or it could run with CSCC although they run classes based on capacity so it can be a money game to build a big-power engine with them.
There's lots of info out there on suspension etc so I won't try to advise on that but a good setup is key so research before you purchase.

Hi
I'd suggest an Mx5 (I know.. that's what everybody says.. but stay with me..)
The Hillclimb and Sprint Association run a class specifically for them within their championship (loads of events spread all over the country, only a handful of which count - so you can do a 'championship' while only travelling regionally) so you've got somewhere to be competitive.
If not, in the 'Road Going' class at any local hillclimb or sprint you'll have people to compete against.
(while you do see the odd large saloon on the hills, small hatchbacks and small sports cars are much more common - and for good reason too, a big car on a hill is 'interesting' at some of the venues.)
The 750Mc run a race series for them - as do several others, so there's plenty of opportunities there too.
Bits are cheap and plentiful and loads of people have already done what you're planning, so with a bit of due diligence you won't make a mistake as somebody else will already have made it..
You'll be easily able to pick up a car, already done, to more-or-less the spec you want.
The car will hold it's value, there's always going to be a market for a 'sorted' Mx5.
