Citroen C1 Challenge

As someone who has never raced before and doesn’t have the funds or time to take this up seriously would i be able to race for just one weekend on a novice flag after doing a bit of training to get the lowest grade of license?
If so what kind of upfront costs would be involved and what possible costs ie if i crash, could be involved?

Yes. You will be slow as f

I was offered a drive in a 24 hour race with 6 other drivers for £1,200 + damage all in. No idea how competative this is and I wasn't interested so didn't persue. Damage is usually not charged for bashed pannels in "rubbing" incidents but more serious impacts such as with a wall / rolling etc. Costs could be up to the total rebuild value of the car. Note, regardless of fault, the driver is still liable. HTH.

1200 in a team of six is about right I would say depending on where it is, if its Spa (which as a novice you couldnt do) then it will be an awful lot more.
It's not that bad. If you've done trackdays you'll be fine.
We're were three blokes with no experience at the start of this year. We bought and built a car (cage welded by a pro, the rest we did ourselves), did our ARDS tests at Castle Combe in Feb and went racing for the first time ever in Pembrey. Qualified 38th out of 39 and finished 21st in a five hour race. An epic experience and one I thoroughly recommend having a crack at if you have the means.
Don't forget you'll need your own safety gear that doesn't need to be new, but must be in date. Overalls, boots, gloves and a helmet with HANS device.

Being reshelled as we speak to deal with 2018 panel damage
Probably won't be the only time!
I think that some people confuse "low cost Motorsport" with "disposable motorsport".
I am glad I did the first C1 Rockingham 24, but I won't be doing another one.
£1200 for a drive between 6 drivers in the uk (ie 2 x 2 hours stints plus practice) plus damage is probably about right. I think we each agreed to pay for a reshell between us and each payed out another £400 from memory on the basis that we had all the required bits and we're just paying for labour.

I see MSV have officially launched enduro Ka, once again far too many race series doing the same thing, and running around is a rusty old Ka with that wheezy engine does not sound like a good basis for a new series!
Always the way. Whenever there is a series not every can win so splinter groups form leading to new clubs and dilution of the original. There's always someone in a series b
However the KA has a much better power to weight ratio and, from my personal experience in racing in series run by both, I would much prefer to race in an MSV series rather than a BARC one.

Also its not come about as result of people not being capable of competing in the C1s it came about as MSV wanted to fill what is an obvious gap in their offering that a C1 style series could fill.
What I don't understand is this recent influx of other stuff, such as the 116 Challenge, something that makes no sense to me!
Cscc have also launched the rx8 cup too which will run as a class in the new millennium series and so far 20cages have been built by laser cages for cars mine included in that number. Cost capped controlled formula with little mods make going racing cheaper especially as you can share with a mate.
AT least with the rx8 its a sports car to start with can't think of much worse than going round a track in a c1 or ka tbh.

The organisers rx8 has done well over 500 miles on track during testing at castle combe and being out all day long at the Silverstone motorsport event back in October without issue. Mine has had a recent engine rebuild by rotary motion paid £1500 for it and all in should be 4k race ready.
Will keep a update on reliability over the season.

All you have done is demonstrate an utter lack of imagination, I can think of far worse things that going round a track in a car, any car! AT least with the rx8 its a sports car to start with can't think of much worse than going round a track in a c1 or ka tbh.
Also can we please stop acting as if the CSCC and the RX8 invented one make racing, they didn't, it's also far from the only formula that you can share with a mate.
As for the cost controlled racing thing, there is, rightly or wrongly, no such thing! Some (not all) organisers spend alot of time and resource to do what they can to ensure a formula is as cheap as it can be, but, you can't stop the creep that happens over time and you never will. You can get to a position where you can comfortably sell the idea that a car costs X and a seasons cost should be about Y but someone will always have a bigger bank balance to play with. What you do with well written regulations is negate that advantage but it doesn't stop the spend just what can be achieved with it, if you have a driver willing and able to spend each and every weekend testing and driving round in circles their costs will spiral, to keep pace with them someone else will need to do the same, tyre and maintenance bills climb as a result. Again nothing unique there about the RX8 it's common to everything from Civics to MX5's to BMWs of varying builds etc etc
I am sure the RX8 will be fine, but it will never take on any of the really established stuff and doesn't really fill a gap that isn't filled elsewhere, its only USP is a rotary engine. The RX8 isn't known for reliability regardless of any good work being done by whomever to try and remedy this.

Doubt it would run for 24 hours solid though.... I am also dubious that a front running one will be 4k, this isn't limited to the RX8 stuff (see above), front runners will by and large spend more than a base build cost, even if the difference is just a paint job they have still spent more however most likely the front running guys will be doing things such as replacing calipers for brand new items for an example, diff rebuilds, all new bushes, electronic safety switches..... The list is endless but will put a well built car over the 4k mark. Will keep a update on reliability over the season.
I have wished the RX8 well in the past but, to be frank, it's not the second coming the organisers make it out to be!
