Hi, after recently checking with the AA about whether we're covered for breakdown when towing a race car on a trailer they said no. We have a Cayenne towing a 911 on a Brian James trailer. Think they said they could put cayenne on a beaver tail and tow trailer behind, but the total weight limit needs to be under 3.5 ton. a Cayenne with all out race tools and fuel is probably over 2.5 ton, the 911 is about 1100kg, and then the twin axle brian james brings us well over 3.5.

So so all the people that tow a race car, who do you use for breakdown cover?

Member of the "Camping and Caravan Club" (don't laugh), and that includes RAC cover for recovery of car and trailer/ caravan

cheers Andy, I'll look into RAC, any idea if they have a total weight limit?

I find the breakdown assistance that I buy as an add-on to my motor insurance with Adrian Flux to be the best value around. It includes recovery of car and trailer in the UK including on the continent for a certain number of days per year, it's about £56 IIRC and my tow car is 22 years old.

Not sure!
Go via the C & C Club - as if you go direct to RAC, they will give you their standard cover.

I’ve had no issues being recovered by the AA. A6 Allroad tow car with a Brian James race shuttle and a ~800kg Exige in the back. No weight limit has ever been mentioned, even when I asked to make sure the trailer was covered on recovery.

Bit late reading this but double check this as I’m pretty sure the 3.5t restriction is bed weight on the truck. As for the trailer if the cayenne can tow it im confident a 13t + truck can manage.

I would check again with the AA as unless they have changed their fleet of recovery trucks or gone to sub contractors they were all class 2 hgvs, giving load weights far in excess of 3.5t .
They may well have changed the fleet to 7.5t and under .
