I've offered someone that I know storage of their single seater in my garage. I don't know if they'll accept or not, but I was wondering what I could charge if they did? I have absolutely no idea at all.

My garage is brand new, fully insulated and sealed with no intrusion from drafts or rain, with proper flooring and thermostatic heating from radiators on all four walls that never lets it go under 10C. For working on the car it can be heated up to 15-20C quite quickly and easily, it has white walls all round and is lit to 750 lux evenly throughout. A movable 500kg hoist is built in. It's basically like the interior of a modern house, just brighter. What's a fair and honest amount to charge for storing a car in there?

How regularly are you allowing them access to work on it? Will they retrieving it every other weekend from March - September?

I rent a garage (original rented for my race car temporarily) from the council for £42 a month. Most single garages seemed to be around £80 without power. A car storage company that I've used charged £80+vat, also without power.

If it's for a mate, it's not too much inconvenience (access and amount of time he's there banging around) then £80-100 would be what I'd have happily paid when I had my car.

I've no idea about intended access to work on it to be honest, that would be discussed though if he takes me up on the offer. Thanks for your thoughts on cost. Even if he's not interested, it would be good to know these typical costs as money's a bit tight and I may be able to offer the space to someone else.

I'd have snapped your hand off at £80-100 if you were my mate. I'd expect business/no-mate costs to be at least 50% more than that.

Probably depends where in the country you are
Up North things are quite a bit cheaper - I rent out a large 3/small 4 car garage - 24 hour access for £40pm

It's a difficult one, even more so if not quite a friend/favour sort of deal.

Once you introduce charging, some degree of risk/liabilities also follow. Everything can all seem wonderful and friendly until some sort of accident might occur.

Is power included?

Is the car insured for fire/ theft etc under your policy or his?

Is it exclusive or do you/ someone else have use of access to the garage? IE what happens if your friend says his car has been scratched?

Are you declaring it as income for tax purposes?

All affects how much you charge.

It sounds like a high spec building that you have forked for, and in W Berkshire i’d expect it to be reasonably pricy!!!!!

Thanks for your thoughts. It would be declared on my SA, yes. He would be responsible for insurance, a scratch would be just trust between us; my wife and I are the only people with access to the garage.

I'm a bit of an eccentric perfectionist and designed and fitted out the garage myself smile It took me ages mind you; I'm not sure I'd want to do it again!
