Must say i welcome the the code 60 flag. bring a race quickly under control and also means you can get back racing quicker as well.

The way I read that is it's very much like F1's virtual safety car in how it will work?

Sounds a good idea to me.

you work it out before hand, i.e. what revs in a particular gear... and then use the rev counter... then put a sticker on the dash to remember !!!

i..e 2000rpm in 4th - 60kph

we just use a separate button operated rev limiter set as graham says before hand to desired revs to = speed in a chosen gear.

Creventic (Dubai / Barcelona 24hr races etc) have been using the Code 60 for years. It works really well as they can monitor each sector time so nobody gains time. As everybody drops to 60 kph at the same time they can access the problem quicker as the green flag can be waved as soon as the problem has been cleared. Also the pit lane can stay open.

Of course you will always find 1 car driving between 50-55 kph....

what a complete pain in the backside. Utter waste of time. We've managed with flags, then a safety car, we don't need any more race control stuff.

Suspect that it will only be used in certain (endurance) races.

The same way you work it out for the pit limiter!

Out of interest what level/what do you race? Reason I ask is over the last 4 years I have seen two near misses a year with live snatch during a race all because people were not slowing enough for yellows. This removes the whole "how much do I need to lift through a yellow zone" to which the answer is, if you have to ask you aren't lifting enough..

I like the idea of the 60 flag, removes any human decision of how much to lift and keeps the marshalls (you know those unpaid volunteers who turn up week in and week out so we can go racing) save!

I always cringe a bit with live snatch, I'm not a great fan.

I generally dislike the increase of regulation and all the enforcement and penalties that go with it. Just too much extra stuff. So now there will be marshals with speed cameras.

Hey ho I'm sure it'll be fine!

Live snatch is a gift and curse I think and it really does depend on the situation as to if it is appropriate.

As for marshalls with speed guns, had exactly that at an MSV race back in august, one guy with a speed gun checking everyone as they trundled through the pit lane.

It is quite easy to police. All cars have transponders they will just look at those. Why are they bringing in Code 60, simply because not enough racers are slowing down enough for yellow flags.

It should be useful for short races; the use of a Safety Car in a 15-20 minute race can effectively kill the race. Use the Safety Car after a couple of laps & by the time it's picked up the leader, got the stragglers all nicely bunched up, the incident's been dealt with & the Safety Car's gone in you can have lost half the race.

We had a good example of how the Safety Car can ruin a short race at Oulton Park on Saturday. Two laps into a 15-minute race the SC was called out; when it cleared there was only time for one lap before the chequered flag, making the race something of a farce. Of course even under Code 60 racing laps would have been lost, but the recovery vehicle could have been straight out as soon as Code 60 was called, saving the time it took to scramble the Safety Car & to get the field under control & racing could have restarted as soon as the incident was cleared rather than incurring delay caused by the Safety Car's in lap. This may well have saved two or three laps, making the race slightly less farcical.

Drivers pay a lot of money to race. Anything that helps in ensuring that they get the racing laps they have paid for has to be a good thing.
