What Race Tyre?
Discussion
I have a Westie that I'm looking to race later this year. My R888's are past it (the fronts are dated 2012) and I need to get a new set of tyres all round.
I believe R888R's (medium compound (GG's ?)) and Avon ZZR's (medium compound) to be two options. I have free list 1a/1b/1c choice.
I'll be looking to compete in both 15 minute and 40 minute race formats. I currently run 15 inch rims and have 195/50's on the front and 205/50's rear.
What's the best tyre out of the above options?
Thanks

We raced a Westfield in Mag 7s last year. We put 13" CXR wheels (8" rear and 6" front) and used the ZZRs for the dry and ZZSs for wet.
The significant majority of the series used ZZR tyres. We found that the gave you tremendous grip very quickly and didn't go off for the duration of a 40 minute race. We worked out we were putting 1.6g through the tyres at Oulton Park.

Direzza's and 048R's work well for me in 15 or 40 minute races. You have to be carefull not to over inflate them or they will be cooked by the end. I try and finish a "hot" session at around 30-32 PSI on the fronts and use the rear pressures to aid balance. That can mean starting as low as 18 depending on the track and track temps. Makes the first lap "interesting"!
Direzza's give you massive grip when they are new and on the edge they fall away quickly. They also harden after multiple heat cycles and you lose some time when they get old. 048R's are much more progressive on the limit and you can really slide the car around with confidence in a way I couldn't with the Direzza's.
I am running a pretty standard Clio 182 with about 3 degrees camber on the front and no tow in on the rear.

Hellor Rich. Are the ZZR's medium compound and if so, where do you get them from? I'm looking to a round of the Mag 7's later in the year. The significant majority of the series used ZZR tyres. I'm sure the concensus tyre is the way to go
