As highlighted in the October 2015 issue of the MSA Newsletter, its important to have your harness shoulder straps fixed so that they lie between horizontal and 20 degrees below horizontal for optimal safety.

Just wondering if anyone has already had to address this by fitting a harness bar to their roll cage and if so, did they just have it welded in or go for a bolt on solution?

I'm looking at the bolt on harness bar option. Add that to the cost of a new helmet and HANS device. £ 600 to start the season but it's that or stay at home and sulk.

I often cross the belts behind the seat to stop them sliding off the Hans. Never had any scrutineers question it, some think its a good idea.

Would you let us know where you source your bolt-on harness bar?

Note, 0-20 degrees below horizontal is the recommendation, but they can be 0-45 degrees below the horizontal and still be legal.

See page 189 of 2016 Blue Book.

Noting that shoulder straps should be crossed if they are a long way back from the seat yet people still seem to think it is correct for the belts to go straight back parallel.

On the angle question I did try at first with my shoulder belts routed to the rear seat belt mountings at an angle of about 40 degrees, the HANS yokes didn't sit flush on my chest and the top of the thing pushed hard and painfully into my shoulders when tightened. Routing back onto the cage at a gentle angle of about 10 degrees resulted in a much more comfortable HANS with the yokes pulled evenly into my chest. I am not sure the thing will work properly unless the yokes sit nice and flush on the chest.

The Schroth instructions seem to say 20 degrees max.

I've installed my (new) Schroth belts following the instructions and they work very well (although not impact tested yet or hopefully ever!).

Rallynuts do a door bar bolted to a weld on bracket that would do the job for me. I will speak to my local scrutineer and seek his opinion.

Purchased a door bar for £60 from SafetyDevices. Cut to size and welded the bolt on brackets to roll cage, sorted.
