Brantz trip meter sensor

I have a 1969 911 which I use in historic rallying. Just been trying to fit a Brantz trip meter but have come across a snag ith the sensor. It is the type that the speedo cable threads through and the problem is that once you have cut back the sheathing covering the cable, the knurled nut and section of sheathing do not slide off the cable so you can't then thread it through the sensor. Anyone had any similar experience and if so what was the solution? Looking like a wheel sensor or a sensor on the transmission will be needed instead, but would appreciate any advice before I go wasting any money on something else that does'nt work.
