I've been thinking about buying a track car and doing some races for years now, and I've decided I need to pull my finger out and actually crack on with it, otherwise I'll never start.

Basically where do I need to begin. I literally know nothing, and at the moment this is part of research to help for a plan of action to get me from being currently nowhere to actually starting a race. First 'm going to get some lessons and my national b license, probably at Thruxton.

I was looking at entering the CSCC tin top and for pure ease buying a clio 197 and then the clio cup kit from monster sport uk. It's probably not the cheapest solution but it works.

Are there any other solutions I need to be looking at, any cheaper cars, should I just buy one already prepared straight out, saying that I probably want to build my own.

I was thinking a budget of around £6000 should see me through the season (excluding the car) or should I double this?

A friend of mine used to compete in the Fiesta Championship. She's seriously considering selling her fully prepped and ready to go car. Drop me a DM if you'd like me to pass on your details to her.

You really can't go wrong with http://www.pbmwc.co.uk budget end of racing and newbie friendly. Ask around on the forums and q's http://forums.seloc.org/forumdisplay.php?fid=36 and get yourself down to a pre-season test or race and ask around. Great guys, proper club motorsport!

Actually I think you're already a fair way along as you've got an idea of what you want to race. Get some coaching sorted and pass your ARDS before you commit to anything, though.

I would always advise someone to look at the Caterham Academy.
It's a great place to start on the ladder - pretty even (well as much as it can be) And some of the best racers around started in Sevens.

There are cheaper entry points but I doubt any can be a better starting place.

It's also worth mentioning the Caterham Graduates - a friendly bunch as well smile

ah - then CSCC or maybe one of the 750MC series would be a great place to start smile

I bet you could.

I heartily recommend Caterham Graduates.

Another vote for Production BMW here - it's fantastic close racing, and one of the best value championships in the UK.

The cars are bloody slow, but all the cars in the series are pretty similar so you can learn how to do well and see improvements as you go. All good.

Whatever series you go for, I would recommend buying a car ready to race - it will be cheaper and you know that the things that 'need to be done' will be done already.

I did arrive and drive in my first season because I wanted less to worry about.

Me too. I know an M3 available to rent for trackday trophy.
