I see there's been some discussion on here and FB regarding lateral/side impact protection and the fact that HANS only protects in a front end shunt whilst the Simpson Hybrid restricts head movement both to the front and laterally. I will try the latter on at the show but it just looks so bulky and I'd want to be assured it's comfortable. I'm minded to just change the seat which will need to be changed out pretty soon anyway if the powers have their way. My current Cobra has no wings. What are your thoughts/opinions on winged seats, i.e., the big looped elephant ears, or the thick padded jobs. Pro's and cons please. It's an open topped, closed wheel sports car. Many thanks guys.

The thick padded wings look like they would be closer to your helmet, but will they obstruct peripheral vision?

On the other hand the "elephant wings" probably offer better vision, but seem wider apart therefore offering lesser impact support?

I have both versions.

Visibility is the same with a Hans and full face on, the main difference was that the Cobra's "elephant" version takes up little room at the base. You can get one in a historic mini and in my case an fia B (with hartop) and still position it a long way back in the car (I am over 6 ft).

The other type probably makes car entry slightly less of contortion trick, if like me, you like to step on board with helmet and hans already on.

Compare seat weights too, they can be rather heavy.

I have the top one. Makes no difference to side visibility with a full face on.

If you try one without a helmet on you will think it would, but the helmet and Hans means your head is a fair bit further forward than without.

I can get in and out with helmet and Han's on but it's a challenge.

On the plus side they make you feel nice and safe.

the biggest issue your going to have is fitting the seat into a tuscan and then being able to get in and out as well

I use one in a Mgb with hardtop in place , so there should be room.

I think Tillett offer an FIA seat slider if access is an issue.

its a battle to get any seat in a tuscan, the tunnel is much much bigger than the mg

I have the Sparco seat with those headrest wings. A similar OMP one wouldn't fit in my car. They are all slightly different and it helps to see what other people use in the make of car you're racing - that;s how I knew the Sparco would fit. I swear by wings and HANS - had a corner impact at Donington and on the vid you could see my head hit the wing. 'HANS and wings' = 'belt and braces'!

Sparco offered a carbon head restraint wing a few years ago.

A Tillett HALF seat with the above is the smallest and lightest option.

I attached the wing to the roll cage.

The B is bloody small too!
