hello
next season i will be changing from avon slicks to a race tyre from the ib list, ill be doing this to change classes which will suit my car better.

the tyre i think ill be using is toyo r888 225 45 13 as this is the smallest tyre in diameter that will go over a 9 inch wheel i think.

i believe it comes in only one compound which is a medium hard.

is this correct ?

my car weighs about 650kgs and has around 170 bhp and is fwd, can anyone shed any light on to how these r888 s will perform???

are these r888 better or as good as the avon zzr or the yoko ao48rs or the kumo v70s

In some sizes the 888's are available in 3 compounds: SG-soft, GGG-medium/soft and GG-medium. I don't know if this is the case with the size you need but could be worth enquiring. I use mediums on a 4wd tin top that weights about 1290kg and they tend to overheat after about 4-5 laps which is not a problem for me since I compete in sprints/hillclimbs. They are significantly better than Avon ZZR's imo, but are less durable than 048's. I have no experience of the Kumo's though.

I have found (on a 1,050 kg 911) the R888’s very good – decent life, good in wet or dry, and consistent throughout 40 minute races. They are also good in damp conditions, with better feel than some, and less ‘squirm’. I have also tried the Kumhos, which are similar and excellent in the wet, probably neither quite as grippy as soft A048’s, but I cannot get those in the 16” sizes I require – I use Adams and Page at High Wycombe for supply of the Toyos.

Ant, medium will be perfect for you car, Mick Starkey tried the soft and destroyed them on his fez in one weekend. I use the medium on the civic and they're fine, go off a little towards the end of the race but come on within a lap.

I tried the AO48's at the start of 09 but didn't get on with them, however thats when I 1st started racing and I think I maye have ran the pressures too low. On westfields I've driven, I've never really felt any difference between 48's and 888's.

I'm no expert but have used both Toyo 888s & Yoko A048s on small FWD saloons (Fiats & Alfa) and on a 1000Kg saloon. I'm told that the 888s are a road tyre for the track & that A048s are a track tyre for the road. I used the 888s when they were significantly cheaper than the Yokos as Value was a significant driver for me, however, a couple of years ago Toyo put their prices up so that the prices were similar. I think that the Yokos are slightly quicker but slightly less durable but as the prices are now similar I run the Yoko A048s.

some of thye hillclimb guys are using Avon ZZRs (iirc) and they do caterham sizes and are softer than the average 1B stuff. Speak to BMTR as the compound may be up to race distances in a light car.

also ACB10s used to be available in circuit race compounds in good 13" widths, very light carcass and suited to a 7esque weight too.

Look at Kumhos V70 (V700) too. 4 compounds, the softets of which will be way too soft (i used to use it on the hills/sprints and 2 laps of Catsle combe and they were overheating)

I fully agree with Andy and I'll be running 48s next year.

The khumo v70 in medium compound for a car of that weight are in a different league to the ao48's the lap times i achieved on the khumo tyres were far better than any of the ao48 tyres.all the top runners in the mag 7s in the classic sports car club changed to the khumo's and a couple run the zzr's.As far as weight goes my car is about 450kg and the csr cars must be about 560kg and i also did a few laps of the ring in the new renaultsport 250 which weighs just under 1400kg and that handled amazingly well on the v70's.The ao48's are a great road tyre that can be used on track as previously said.
The front runners in the mag 7s will all give the same feedback as far as the v70's are concerned.

Or maybe go with softs on the rear like the Mini Miglias run? Wear is minimal on ours.

i used to run kumho list 1b tyres back in 2001-2004, sounds like they've got a lot better since then!!

i used to get them direct from kumho, as they are only up the road.
