Think I sold my old one for about 250 on ebay. there are two types and have an internal battery (usually race bikes)or hard wired into the car. All have an individual number that needs to be registered with the time keepers usually done via your race entry form.

If possible (and practical) go for a hard wired one. The rechargeable ones need the batteries replaced at some point which MyLaps will tell you is impossible and you need to buy a new one. There are people who do replace them though.

Seem to go for £200-£250 second hand on eBay.

I managed to pick up a rechargeable one for £165 recently.

Depending on what you're racing, it is sometimes possible to use the 160 kart transponder and they are a bit cheaper to buy.

TSL Timing is where I bought mine - it's hard-wired. Cost over £300 though, and then £30 for my mechanic to wire it in.

Another vote for the hard wired one - smaller, lighter and you don't have to worry about the battery. The wiring is a piece of cake too, two wires - 12v and earth.

wow, thanks for all the replies. one more question though, are all transponders the "same" aside from the obvious identification number? If I were to fit one type will it be ok in any race series?
Seems my race organisers rent them out per race as well and its a lot of races before it starts paying for itself.

Thing is tho its always gonna maintain its value if you ever sold it on 2nd hand. Much easier to have one on the car. ours is hard wired and we never have to think about it. Its on the car, works and thats it.
