My Fiesta has developed a couple of foot long cracks in the screen (normal laminated glass and just the outside layer) - drivers side naturally! Has anyone had issues at scruitineering with this sort of thing? I'd rather not splash out on a new screen until the end of the season.

Yes, failed scruitineering in a 996 Cup car at Silverstone, after begging I was allowed to race on the condition that the screen was changed but wouldn't want to chance it again! (Screen was slightly cracked at the previous race at Brands, we thought nothing of it, then after the first race at Silverstone it got MUCH bigger, was almost excluded for the second race).

yep cracked the taz screen, had to talk my way in through scruit, and cover the crack with expensive helicopter tape....strict instructions to change it.

so you might get away with it once, on the basis it cracked on the trailer, but your going to need o change it at some point.... The taz had 5 screens in 4 years !!!! poly now.

I was going to post my own windscreen thread today, but seems a bit daft so I'll shamefully hijack this one redface

What do you guys think of this regarding scrutineering? It happened during race 1 at Snetterton last weekend. It's fairly close to the drivers eye line but doesn't get in my way when driving. I didn't even notice until I saw the sun reflecting off it many hours later in the paddock!

It came after driving through an asteroid belt at Brands which badly chipped it and cracked from there. Big end bearings also went at Snett too so if possible I'd rather not have to spend another £150 before the next meeting if I can avoid it.

That looks touch and go to me. I think the Scrut will be looking at it and considering what might happen in a race (ie you get hit on the screen and the whole thing crazes so that you can barely see...). The 996 cup referred to below was mine and looked similar to this. It took a whack from a piece of tyre rubber and cracks went in all directions instantly.

One of the MR2's at Snetterton a couple of weeks ago was racing without any windscreen at all, I was suprised this was allowed to pass scrutineering.

Try this:

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Crackattack-Windscreen-DIY...

Used it on road cars and it works. Will bond it together, stop cracks propagating, and reduces the appearance of the cracks.

I've only used it on small 'stars'. Not sure how well itll work on a long crack as you need to force teh resin/glue into the crack.

Maybe worth a shot.

Ralf Budd?

Actually the scrutineer told him to do that after he cracked the screen on the Saturday, along with the back window so they can go racing. I can't say I'd fancy it myself, but I suppose you not that much more exposed than in some kit cars.

Thanks for the link Steve. I'll measure it and see if it's within the 10cm the crack will do. Otherwise I think Jimmy (I assume from your username?) is right, it's a bit touch and go. I really don't want scrutineering issues as we're on the GP track at Brands!
