Talk to Me About.....Boats...
Discussion
I have wanted a boat for ages. Wife says no but I am reaching a point that if she says no again I'll just go and buy one anayway. And her first and only trip will be one-way.
I'm looking around the 24-26 ft region and around 100k.
How much does it cost and where can I trailer-launch from?
Marinas are out of the question, Dubai Marina La-de-dah club want a reccommendation to even make an application and JBH marina want 200dhs per foot per month for a parking space. Unless there is somewhere charging 40dhs per foot per month I'd rather keep it on my drive.

In Dubai, trailer launch can be done from this (Burj al Arab) side of DOSC, tis the jetski launch area.
You (officially) need a pass from the coastguard everytime you leave shore, there is a little office there, but it's easy unless you are leaving at silly o clock in the morning. If you are then get one the night before.
Boat will need to be registered to you and have a DP number, from the 2 friends I have had that have/had owned them the registration process is and can be typical Dubai...
JV, RAK is nowhere, they are not at Al Hamra are they?

Spoken like a man who retained the marriage trousers...respect Do it mate...I did, and never regretted it.
She said no. Alot. And threatened to leave me if I got one.
I asked if she wanted dropping off anywhere.
Compromise was that I put a fund together and save the cash specifically for it, rather than dipping into savings.
So, I'm selling assets and investing in high risk shares. I'll either be keeping the Kayak or heading off into the sunset on a 60 foot monster by year-end.
How much is boat registration and insurance?

Boat registration in Abu Dhabi is a few hundred dirhams...can't remember exactly. However, the big cost here is the Transponder which you have to have by law, and without which you can't complete the registration process. Don't know if the same thing is necessary in DXB. The transponder, including fitting, will set you back 7000 dirhams...which is a shocker since all it does is radio out your coordinates at all times to the AD coast guard! Worse, it's a bloody great box of electronics plus a big stubby aerial which you have to fit somewhere. On a small boat, it's a pain. I had to get almost threatening to get the 'installers' to fit the aerial in the place I wanted at the back of the boat, rather than where they wanted (because it was less hassle), in front of the windscreen...which would have looked st!
Re insurance, ours was just over 4000 dirhams for the year with Axa Marine. That's for a 2008 Yamaha SX230...a 23 foot speed boat with twin inboard engines, worth about 130,000dhs. A word of advice...make sure you've got at least 12 months experience of boat ownership or use (even if you haven't wink wink)! If it's anything powerful (i.e. capabable of more than 40 knots) I think they'll refuse unless you tell them you are experienced. I told them (which was true) that I'd been regularly piloting a friends Sea Ray 240 for the last year, which they accepted.
Best of luck with the investments

Tou will need a transponder for DXB now as well.
Also check carefully any boat you look at, the high salt content in the gulf eats through items like the heat exchanges etc quite quickly.
Also check for mickey mouse wiring, every boat I've looked has been messed around in some way, normally badly.

Yeah good advice, Dictys. I was very careful, following the water test drive, to watch exactly what the then owner did to flush the engines and wash it down after we came back. Luckily, his Pakistani maintenance bloke did all that stuff, and did flush and wash everything down properly. On the down side, our boat had had a small metal switch fitted...using audio gauge wiring...directly between the battery and the fuse box! I'm amazed the previous owner never had a fire on his hands...tt!
We swapped that out for a proper one as the first job!

Fund is up to 10K, anyone sees a boat with a for sale sign on it, please let me know.
How much is the offshore power boat course at the Yacht Club?
Hi Dan - you missed a recent bargain...one of my colleagues resigned and sold his 10 month old 18 foot SeaRay with outboard and gear for 40,000dhs! How much is the offshore power boat course at the Yacht Club?
BTW 10K in a week is good going, especially if your missus is still believing it was petrol money

She is less than 30K as she is. I reckon a Grand is all thats needed to make her look nice.
Plus the 7K ex-pat tax for the transponder.

Check the hull carefully, for any blisters or other damage . Osmosis will be more prevalent on a pre 1990's boat due to the way glassfibre was done in those days. Otherwise treat her as a second hand car, check everything.
One thing to bear in mind, if you are intending to go offshore I would go for a slightly longer boat with a deep V hull shape as it will be a lot more comfortable making progress at speed in choppy or water where there is a swell.

I'm up to 41K today.
Might have found an old 80s boat, going to see it today.
Will post pics for comments and analysis later..... a kind of ME PHers 'ratemyboat.com'
If you can save money at that rate, Dan, I'd wait for a month or so and then spend 80-100,000 on something nice and 25 years newer Might have found an old 80s boat, going to see it today.
