After about one year of living in Dubai (almost to the day), I have bought a car.

Having thought it through for far too long, I decided that I needed something comfy and sensible for getting around and for camping trips or weekends away. I’m not really interested in proper desert driving but you never know when you need to park on a bit of sand in this city.

Sorry it’s nothing too exciting, but at least it’s got the right number of cylinders and, despite what my friends think, I am convinced that gold cars are about to become fashionable again!

Cracking. Let the tyres down and bash some dunes! Don't forget to sit 5mm away from the car in front and repeatedly flash you lights, even though they don't have anywhere to go!

I have a 2007 Tahoe.

Get some 22" rims on her to transform the handling. And those windows need 50% tint, just to give the 'local' look.

I know someone who can tune oodles more power for you too....

I thought I remembered you saying you had a Tahoe, Dan. I had already thought about decent wheels and darker windows . . . you beat me to it!

You gotta go the "drak tint" route - its the only way forward.

Congrats on the new ride.

The windows are already slightly smoked but I agree that they would look better with a darker tint. See the above photo - the front windows are rolled down so you get an idea of how much tint there is in the rear glass.

So the question is . . . how dark to go?

If I get an additional 50% on top of the existing tint, would I be able to see out? Maybe an extra 30% would be dark enough to look good without blocking too much visibility? But 3M do a 70% film so I guess people do get away with it. How do they get around the 30% legal limit? Do the RTA actually check this?

As per Law, we are only allowed to have a 30% tint on our cars, however, you can easily get away with either a 40 or 50% tint. They will remove, if you have tint, the existing and replace with new. You will an option whether to go for a 2 or 5 year warranty on the tint (3M are locaed in Ibn battuta - drop your car off, go watch a movie or shop, come back, car done)

I've got the maximum legal tint (30%) which was done at Ibn Battuta.

Don't really see why you would want any darker than that.

Well done on the purchase btw!

I wouldn't go too dark, on my 4x4 I have to put the window down in a underground car park otherwise I can't see anything. Also on one of the other cars the rear windows are 70% which is too dark at night time and it can be tricky to see dimly lit cars coming up behind.

We have 30% on the drivers/passengers side windows and 50% on the rear seats/boot/rear windows.

That is all you need.

You can see out the front and have a little privacy in the back for those secluded desert drives.....
