I have been offered a Job in the UAE, working in Sharjah but living in Dubai.

I was originally told that I would be provided with a budget to find my own apartment, now I am being told that I have to stay in serviced apartments at the Four points Sheraton.

Does anyone have any experience staying in this type of accommodation?

What sort of contract are you on?

Serviced apartments are ok for short term stuff but terrible for longer - not being able to call somewhere home doesn't agree with me.

Four Points Sheraton is on Bank Street, right in the centre of Bur Dubai - uber busy all the time.

Not exactly where I'd like to live tbh.

Serviced apartments vary hugely. I had a mate and his 6 colleagues over a couple of months ago, and there's was excellent. Nice facilites, pool, bars etc.
Still, I agree that you'll need a place to call home, and put your personal stamp on it. Is there any chance of negotiating the contract?

I'm staying in one here in Dubai now, and will be for a few months until I can rent my own place.

Like the poster above, it's nice enough, but really doesn't feel like home, just a glorified hotel room.
For me, the accommodation provision would have been a deal breaker, I simply would not be happy living here permanently.

That said, of our crew of 7 senior managers, I am the only one to not choose a serviced apartment, so many people obviously find them fine to live in.

I will be in the design office in Sharjah for 18 months to 2 years, so fairly long term.

This is the place they are insisting I stay:
http://www.fourpointssheikhzayedroad.com/en/servic...

It looks nice enough, but as you both have said I want to live some where I can call home (I have been on site living in a camp for the last 3 years). Being able to have my own place was one of the attractions of the job.

I will get on the phone to the hiring manager……

My planned mobilisation date is around the end of March, would be nice to meet some fellow PH when/if I get there.

That location isn't so bad.

I used to commute to Sharjah and as you're going against the flow of traffic it only take 20mins to get to the centre. Always nice to watch the saps going the other way during their two hour journey.

Mrs oilydan was in one at the Dusit for a few months. Still a glorified Bedsit but the room-service menu was excellent, maids service spot-on etc.

Max I could handle would be 3 months. Unless I was single and had no possessions except a little black book...

Thanks for the replies, I’ve spoke with the hiring manager and he is going to look into it some more next week.

I am single and always travel light, but still want to live some where I can call home. Plus, if I end up staying there I might as well throw my plans to save some ££ right out of the window.

Another thing to consider that if you're coming on your own, this type of accommodation might suit, as if you rent an apartment, you'll spend a load furnishing it.

I am flying out to Dubai today, no option other than the serviced apartments, will see how things go.

The TVR has safely been tucked away for the next few months.

Good stuff - have a pleasant journey and make sure you get 5 bottles of wine at Duty Free, or bluff 10 by saying your wife is 'over there somewhere...' smile

I'm living on the Walk at the moment, it's a great place to car watch and good for the social life.
The Palm is about 10 - 15 minutes away by taxi, though I can see it from my apartment window.

The Palm is in no way handy for the Metro.... there's a monorail there, but the planners never linked it to the Metro system proper.

In terms of finding The Walk / JBR on a map, come off the palm, turn right and you're pretty much there.
If you can find the small runway that the skydiving centre uses, move about 1/2 mile past it and that's the walk.

Scratch a great deal of that!!

I've just looked up the hotel they've offered you, it's in Al Barsha, near the Mall of the Emirates

http://www.millenniumhotels.com/ae/grandmillennium...

They offer a shuttle bus to the nearest metro stop and it is about a ten minute drive from the Palm, probably 20 minutes from JBR

Grand Millenium also has a Belgian Beer Cafe in it. Mmmmmmmm. You can walk to the metro from it in 5 mins, but I guarantee you'll be using cabs within 5 mins of being here - esp. so when it warms up!

There's one around the corner. You've got Nelson's pub in the Rotana around down the road and Rock Bottom 'night club' only twenty stumbles further!

TECOM is actually quite a handly little area these days.

rock bottom you say? i've been told about that place. utter meat market filled with ladies of dubious morality drinking cheap, lethal cocktails. and all within stubling distance of my front door.

i may have to check it out.... whistle

all sounding good location wise. HR girl [who incidentally sounds very hot and flirty on the phone] clearly working in my interests.
