Taxation on World Wide Income for UK Expats
Discussion
See the 'nice to know' thread I think.
The consensus is that it is popular with the Daily Mail and some communist MPs but given the relatively small number of people affected (if you discount all of those who work in countries with recipricol tax regimes) theres not that many of us getting away with it in the grand scheme of things. Also the difficulty and number of people required to police such a policy at a time when they're trying to shrink the size of the state it is unlikely to get to the top of anyone's list any time soon.
If it does happen Asterix has said we can all get jobs as chai wallahs and office boys at his wife's company...

I am the only one who doesn't see the logic with this plan?
If you're not based in the uk (ordinarily resident) then surely we shouldn't need to pay tax there. Tax is basically a charge for the infrastructure/services provided by the government and if you don't use these things, why should you need to pay for them?
Living in the UAE, we pay directly for schools, healthcare, roads etc - hence no tax. I would be mightily pissed off if I had to pay for all these things here and then contribute for someone else to enjoy them in the UK, too. Maybe I'm missing something but it seems pretty simple.
When I go back to the UK and drive on their roads, use their hospitals and put my kids in their schools, I'll be happy to pay tax to do it.
I'm not worried though - it looks like a total non-story.

I think we're all with you. The idea seems to stem from a belief that the government has some sort of right over your income based on the fact that your were born there, lived there and will probably return.
When I first came across it I was amazed - such a restrictive process. The Yanks are all over it and if you denounce your residency and leave they slap you with an exit tax. fkers!
Tax is gay.

It would be a nightmare to police. I mean I bank with HSBC at the moment, but how much luck would they have trying to get statements from Dubai International or ADCB?? Let's just hope that sense prevails. I would expect something like this from a Labour govt, as their 'fairness' test is pursued regardless of sense. I'd be very dissappointed if this came in under a Tory administration. Can't imagine that many MPs would really want this seeing as alot of them would presumably be hit heavily by it.
