There is a good chance that I will be moving over to Dubai this year, I've wanted to work there since early on in my career and it seems like the time is right. I may be soon in discussions with a potential employer and I'm currently getting my head around how much I would need to maintain my lifestyle .

Currently looking at the cost of accomodation, any job I will get will be in the DIFC, and I have an ex colleague who is currently working there and he lives in Downtown Khalifa I believe. He tells me that its about 10 mins from the DIFC and there is rarely any traffic. Is that an area that I should be concentrating on? I ask because it's all well and good being close to work, but if other areas are much better to live in, I'd prefer to live in those. Obviously I dont want a 2 hour journey into work every day either!

Any information would be great from locals.

Are you wanting a Studio/1 bed/2 bed/3 bed apartment or you want a villa? I have heard of 3 bed villas going for AED75,000 per year (GBP13,3k) in Mirdif, which is an expat community and not that far from DIFC.

Are you wanting accommodation close to pubs/clubs/shopping centres and the like or even schools?

Input your data and have look at what is on offer. DIFC is fairly central with good access and egress to all the major road networks.

have a scoot around on those websites using the drop down boxes and let us know what you see.

As above really. Depends what you want. If you HAVE to be close to the office, then that's fine. However, move a little out into "The sticks" then you'll get a lot more for your cash. same as anywhere I guess.

The most desirable areas to live are Dubai Marina, Palm Jumeirah and Old Town (Burj Khalifa district). Both Dubai Marina and the Palm have the added advantage of being next to the beach, a big plus in my opinion.

What line of business are you in? I do a lot of work in the DIFC.

Looking for a 2 bedroom place, or a large 1 bedroom. It is just me that will be living there, but Id like to have space for when people visit.

Im not as fussed about saving money as I am about getting the right place, in London I lived in St Johns Wood, which isn't that far from The City, not too far from the west end, but a relatively quiet neigbourhood so I could read my paper on Sunday morning.

I guess for me when looking at the sites above (thanks for the links) properties that are 140k look good, and so do some that cost 90k, but the areas mean nothing to me.

6th Gear, I work in the Insurance industry, not 100% sure that I will be moving, but if I do we should arrange to meet up.

wherever you live here, forget the "propsect" of both walking and catching public transport. Taxi's are Ok, relatively cheap and can be easily found.

Dubai Marina is the "hot spot" having loads of facilities within easy walking distance, but is a bh traffic wise.

At the end of the day, most locations in Dubai are reachable in 30mins from a central location, dependent on traffic.

Sounds to me like you want to be staying in Downtown Burj Khalifa. It's ten minutes from the DIFC and is a very nice community with all you'll ever need (with the exception of a beach) right on your doorstep.

1 beds range from AED 70K to AED 100K depending on the building and two beds range from around AED 100K to AED 150K, again depending on the building.

I live in Downtown. Parts of it are still being built and our building is surrounded by building sites, but we've been there nearly two years and really like it. We pay about 75,000AED per year for our one-bedroom apartment, which is a good size, has a pool, gym and supermarket and is within walking distance of Dubai Mall and the Metro station. DIFC is easy to get to from there - 10 minutes would be a slow journey!
We could get cheaper by moving out to the sticks, but I like being in the middle of town and we'd probably spend a shedload on taxis for going out n' stuff.
