So, Mrs C and I are beginning to wonder whether we should get one! There is no way I will queue for an entire day, so if we have to leave the UAE, then so be it! Does anyone know what the penalties will be yet?
Mrs C is gonna pop into one of those "typing" places (laugh) and see if she can get us booked in. I wonder how long it'll take.

So, have you sorted yours?

Did mine and the families last year. Ok so the office got the typing done, but did the time slot booking done over the internet and it took about 10 minutes all in on the day (friendly and helpful staff). We went to the Barsha branch.

Now finding somewhere you can use your Emirates id card is another thing (banks don't accept them as proof of id................, or at least they didn't)

We got our a year or so ago, made an appointment online. Before we went filled in the forms online and then took the relevant docs.

We made our appointment at the branch in Abu Dhabi behind the Carrefour on Airport Rd, took no more than 15 minutes.

Reading the papers the other day looks like the deadline has been moved to 2014!

Also yet to find a place that it is any use at though.

Blimey, sounds like you guys had it easy! reading the 7 Days the other day I assumed it would take me a week of camping/queueing at the typing places to get cracking!

Moved to 2014? Where did you read that? Please make it true!

Our office is booking slots but I am resigned to becoming a fugitive from the law when I get back from my Christmas break. The ID 'authority' is somewhat distant from all other government agencies and seemingly from reality itself.

At worst they'll spit their dummy and demand we all leave the country and then someone sensible at the top of the (palm) tree will tell them to shut up and move the date another year...or three...again.

Did it about a year ago with the missus - queues in Dubai were massive even then, so we went to Umm Al Quwain early one morning. Took us about 15 minutes, no queuing, and we stopped at Barracuda on the way back. smile

I don't have one and am not overly concerned about it.

Only worry would be not being able to re-register the car so will probably do it in the new year.

Has there been some stuff in the press recently?

Don't tend to read the local papers...

Sh!t, forgot about the car!
Well the 7 days were running something but suggest sthat almost 50% of residents habven't got them. I'm not too concerned with being able to get stuff done....well, cause I can't anyway. I just hope the fines aren't too bad.

We were told at work that there was a 3K fine for not having this by 1/1/2011.

So went to get typing done and they will not complete the paperwork unless you have 6 months of visa left. Found out that my labour card has expired and my visa expires on the 31/12/2010.

My PRO is going to get a rocket lit under his backside...

Dubai - There is no official law imposing any fines, penalties or deadlines for obtaining the Emirates ID in Dubai. Dubai Immigration and RTA currently do not require the card and there is no plan in place to make it a pre-requisite as of 1 January 2011.

Abu Dhabi - An Emirates ID is required for renewal of driving license and/or vehicle registration. The Emirates ID is the valid ID, a passport will not be accepted in place of the ID.

An update.
Mrs C went and queued up. The ladies only queue is fairly short and she is able to get my appoinment done as well. .......if the systems had been up! There si such a back-log that all systems are down and people are being asked to leave their passports and "We will get bak to you". Yeah, righto.
So, even if she goes back another day, they are not taking any new applications on, as they have to clear the back-log first.

I went to get my driving licence in Abu Dhabi earlier this week and they wouldn't process it until I had my ID card or at least had my interview. So as you can imagine with the current load on the system for ID cards I've had a week from hell. I had to bribe a typing shop to do my application the same day, their current lead time was 3 weeks and many typing shops are closing their doors due to the sheer volume of applicants. One typing shop said they needed my passport for 45 days!, jog on.

Once I had my application form I went back to the offices in Mussafah and waited from 7am to 3pm to be told to come back the following morning by the general guy (Green uniform) he decides who get one of the 80 numbers for the interviews that day. I tried other options and went to Marina Mall but again volume of people mean't that queues were starting at 3am for only 35 appointments a day!.

The following morning at 7.30am I went back to Mussafah hoping the general would spot me in the crowd and get me in the number system, but it was another general guy so made no difference to him how long I'd waited the day before. I ended up going to the manager of the facility who took some pitty on me (The majority of people there, weren't needed a driving licence) and got me a number for an interview, (3 hours later) I'm having my finger prints taken and paperwork stamped. No queue for driving license and 5 minutes later I can drive legally. I think my ID card comes in 3-4 weeks, but to be honest I couldn't of given a crap about the ID card it was my driving license I needed.

If your in the system for an ID card, i.e been to a typing shop and got an application then I would suggest waiting until after the NY to do the interview it will save you alot of pain!.

Might be worth you coming up to Dubai to get it done. I believe the queues are significantly shorter
