What better place to ask than the petrol guzzling Pistonheads of the Middle East.

Right, the Mrs wants to sell her 2.5 y/o 2.0l Audi TT and get something else (has to be NEW and CUTE!). She has her heart set on a soft-top, for which I have put my foot down and clearly stated it must be a hard-top convertible.

We test drove the above two cars (the Z4 was the 2.5l) and I have to admit, neither individually beat the TT, but combined they do. The SLK is a lot better looking, whilst the Z4 had the better performance. Fit and finish, I would still take the TT, just. I am trying to come up with reasons for which one i could live with. The SLK is the girls car, but the BMW is more the "mens" car (you seen it - greased back hair, fag in mouth, arm on door)??????????

SLK would probs hold its value better than the BMW. BMW have a service contract incl, Merc do not.

We did look at alternatives i.e VW EOS but she did not like that. I can't convince her to get the car I like, which is the Scirocco (its not a BLOODY convertible).

So, collective, which one or are there others out there I am missing?

I await flaming - Yes, I could GROW A PAIR! hahahaha

Out of the 2 I would opt for the Z4, simply because I wouldn't drive the Merc! Does the Cayman come in at around the same sort of money?

Why not just get a Boxster? Better to drive than Beemer or Merc, cheaper than the Z4 and a soft-top to keep her happy.
But out of the two you've tried, I'd say Z4.

Both the Z4 and SLK are around the 200k mark - brand new. TBH, we did not check the Gayman!

I am loathe to get a soft-top convertible, would much prefer the hard-top versions.

we test drove the 2.0 Audi TT soft-top before buying the coupe - did not like it, plus, fabric colours fade badly.

I know you said new, but for 200k, you could get yourself into an SL55....

Couldn't you also slip the letters AM & G on there as well? (or is that what they are??!!)

XK? Just tell her it is new and buy a 2nd hand one!

Do Corvette do a soft top?

Or just get her a 207cc and get yourself a Supercharger for the CR8.....

Another vote for a Boxster - why the downer on fabric tops? Never had any problems with the cloth, but my plastic back window has clouded badly. Later glass ones avoid that problem, and it's a far better drive than the Merc. Drove both (including a very rapid AMG SLK32), but the Boxster that we ended up with still puts a smile on my face every time I drive it. Topless this morning to get the papers!

Another Boxster vote here. The Merc and the Beemer are nice but not in the same league for dynamics.

Of course the 'Gayman' (thought people had grown out of that) is even more focussed dynamically but I'm guessing already that idea has been dismissed?

Yep, that's what it is. Awesome NASCAR sound. Monsters most in a straight line. Not too shabby in a corner (though not as good as a Boxster). Women like 'em. Men like 'em. Hard top, open top.

Only problem is, it'll be getting on a bit and bills are supercar expensive.

Oily,
funny you mentioned the Camero, we actually went into the Stealership on the same day as we had the test drives of the SLK and Z4. Man, the interior is pants - fecking aweful. Sadly, no, the convertible will not be coming over (so they told me). Plus, its not really a car for the Mrs, she sat inside it and you could not even tell if she was in the car or not hahahahaha

Cheers for all the replies. The Boxster appears to be winning. I mentioned this to her, she does appear to be interested. When did the Boxster stop production - 2008?

Cayman - she likes them, but not 100% sure.

We can't get another car until we sell her TT, and in this market, it will take a while.

They only actually made 324 Boxsters. You'd be lucky to find one... wink and I have the only Cayman made, so best you look for an MX5.

I've got a Z4 3.0sdrive, did consider an SLK as well but with the new shape coming out next year to buy a new one now is just silly. The Z4 does well out here, the metal and shape seems to avoid the normal car park door opening dents (mustang picked up a lot of small side dents from parking beside landcruiser doors that would often be tapped into it) and the 'normal' driving mode is comfortable, the 'sport' mode is a little more fun and lets you screech round the corners and if you are in the mood for something more leary or want to do some red light tyre burn outs the 'sport +' takes off the drivers aids and lets you be a real silly bugger. The temptation of the 35sdrive and the addition of twin turbo to the engine and a DSC gearbox is tempting but the price jump is hard to make - plus turbo in a hot and dusty climate like the middle east is not really a good thing.

The price - I bought my one and haggled it to 175,000 Qatari Riyals) and the usual demanding extras - ipod connector, bmw baseball cap, keychain, boot liner etc.

Before the Z4 had a 2008 Mustang, did like the charm and character of the 'tang but the cheapness is evident. Moving to the Z4 has made driving much less dramatic but much easier. One tip I would give is that although you can live without the idrive system and quite a few of the other options you really must tick the box for the comfort access option - this allows you to drop the roof (or raise) from the key remote and also means you dont need to put the key fob into the dash to start the car - it sounds like a small hassle but it makes a big difference to the living with the car and the remote roof drop function means you dont have to wait 20 seconds in the car while the roof goes back up. also helpful is the ability to semi raise the roof to get more boot (or trunk if you prefer) access. Also if you like music get the pemium sound system, the standard one is pathetic and with the roof down at speed it struggles - the premium gives great sound and sweet rumbles in the seats.
