Car for Wife 4x4
Discussion
Hi All,
Struggling with this decision as we are new to Dubai and also new to buying a 4x4, in the UK she would have a golf gti / mini / 3 series. So a 4x4 in the desert does not fit well with my auto knowledge.
However we are in Dubai and we also have a 6 week old so we want to join the rest and get somehting safe and reliable and of course big.
The choices we have narrowed it down to are : Ford Edge / CRV likely to be new, or alternatively a used Range Rover / Toureg / XC90.
I am keener on the used idea as you get more for your money but are used cars a bad idea here ? and are they likely to cost me a fortune to run maintenance wise.
Any views from those who have been in the region a while would be appreciated.
Thanks
K

Do you actually want to take it offroad or is purely for a big car to do the school and Spinneys run in?Struggling with this decision as we are new to Dubai and also new to buying a 4x4, in the UK she would have a golf gti / mini / 3 series. My views on used versus new is the same as everywhere in the world, buy at about a year old once someone else has taken that first depreciation hit on it.
Buy GCC spec, the warranty will be transferable, most have at least a 3 year, 60k km warranty.
Not sure what budget is but I would seriously consider a used Prado, great residuals, great off road, fine on the road.

My missus is going to get a 2yr old Prado when she summons the bravery to actually drive.Edited by IanUAE on Wednesday 10th November 12:33
Make sure you get something that can off road well and has smallish wheels - not the big bling rims (so you can have higher profile tyres).
You have to get out into the desert driving and camping - awesome stuff.
Thanks for all the feedback and tips. I now want the camoflagued car shown above, better than the common old Hummer's we keep seeing.
mmmmmm so its looking like a toyota or a toyota then.
I did quite fancy an FJ cruiser and we even went to see one but considering its size we couldnt even get the child seat in the back without having the front seat pushed too far forward for comfort. Shame it doesnt have special sliding rear seats than move to give more space.
We are not really big fans of the Prado as its can look a bit awkward, but im now off to have a bit of a nose on Dubizzle again...... cheers all

My wife has a Tahoe.
Black windows and a set of 21" chrome wheels and you look like a local - you get left alone/cars move out of the way!
Its big, 7 seats, comfy and powerful. All the tour companies use them for desert safaris as they can move big loads in the sand.
A Corrola hit her from the rear and collapsed up its own @rsehole, total loss. It put a 1 inch scratch on the Tahoe Bumper
