I'm looking to buy a second car. Our daily family drive is a 2008 VW Touareg (wife & baby). I want something that's fun to drive, quick and reliable. Budget around AED 130,000.
I recently drove the new Golf GTI mk 6 which I suppose ticks the boxes. It was quick and great in the handling department. New they cost 125,000 AED.
Second hand Cayman S?
Jaguar XK?
Merc SL?
Thoughts?

Actually I change my mind. I've ragged a TT and a Cayman S round a track and the Cayman is definitely the more fun, though I personally don't like PDK. Also I suspect on the road, the Cayman will be more fun at sane speeds. Plus it'll be newer and less likely to break the bank if things go wrong.

Any of the above . . . the Golf, not so much. What about an American muscle car?Jaguar XK?
Merc SL?
Appreciate all your comments
Got to be a Cayman S at that price level, the Porsche Club UAE is also very active and the events are very good. Just did a drive to Fujairah on Friday with he club, 40 odd cars turned out and it was a quality day. Track season has just started if you want to get some action, they have novice events so there's no crazy locals or kids ripping around like loons.
I had a Cayman S for 2 years, loved it - just the right amount of power to be satisfying but not crazy to get you into too much trouble (although usefully faster than a Golf GTI/R32), handling is amazing and it was very reasonable to run cost wise. Keep the warranty with Porsche and its worry free motoring IMO. Yank muscle is great when you floor it, but if you're a keen driver then you'll get bored with it after a month. A Cayman S will keep you entertained for years! You may hanker after more power after a while, that's what the GT3s are for...

I have to say I have a bit of a love/hate relationship with Porsche. On any objective measure, they are fabulous cars. I hear they are brilliant to drive, they are really well engineered, they are quick and they generally look good. But for some reason, I just find them a bit sterile. And the garage where I live is full of pork. Since I’m quite new here, if I were in the market for a sports car, I’d probably prefer something that you can’t easily get back home in the UK.
Sorry to be the troll on here. I’ve met a few Porsche-owning PH’ers from here in person so, particular apologies to you guys.
It’s nothing personal!

My 996TT is about to go up for sale - the GT3 has been "decomissioned" and is coming back on the road. Clearly there is no comparison between the two - one is a competent all-round supercar, the other is a madman (esp in its current spec), but I understand Geoff's point about Porsche's mainstream cars.
What makes Porsches so good is that you can drive to the office every day then take them to the track on a weekend without requiring any modifications, or any particularly special service schedule. BMW and maybe one or two other manufacturers get close, but otherwise I struggle to find a comparable manufacturer.

Hi mate, just had a look at your profile and I'm very interested in getting some more info on sprinting in the region? Will send you a pm for more info...What makes Porsches so good is that you can drive to the office every day then take them to the track on a weekend without requiring any modifications, or any particularly special service schedule. Also apologies to the OP! We should take this offline I guess.
Appears you want a bit O luxury with the "need for speed" thrill.
I would suggest an Mitsu Evo - can't go wrong with a lancer and there are lots up for sale.
Golf R32 - quick AWD car with the V6
CSV CR8 - over 400bhp and enough torque to spin the planet.
Audi RS4 - if you can find a decent one.
