Mate,

Where did you buy your boat from?! I cannot find one anywhere and am getting sick of looking.

Dunk, it seems no-one leases them so just gonna buy one. Back in the day I have decided on a Fibrafort, but this was going on internet pics alone.

The only stipulations are that it can't be more than 25ft, have a single outboard, be able to pull a ski, sun shade, and must look the nuts!
Can't decide if I wnat a cabin or open sun-bathing space at the front.

Anyone know where "Boats R us" is in the UAE where I can walk in a buy one?
Cheers.

Used to be a boat shop behind Choitrams in the greens, but that went bust, so now the only ones are the Nautica mall in Al Qoz just behind interchange 3, and a new shop immediately behind Times Square Centre

Check the Marinas as well because there is almost always a broker there, and also there might be a for sale board for boats in the Marina which is good as you can see them right away and also ask the Marina office how often the boat is used and maintained etc.

RAK Plastics, in err RAK... mainly fishing boats though I think.

Gulf Crafts Silver Craft line do a 20fter with single outboard, open bow.

Al Dhaen boats are good if you can find one that fits your spec although most are around 30ft with twin outboards.

If you have something with a small cabin up front be good for storage and getting changed etc but you'll want a/c then more than likely, open bow will be fine if you just want to go out on the water and have fun and relax on the weekend etc.

The Yahama showroom on SZR have a nice 25ft jet boat for sale with trailer, brand new however and I'm not sure the price.

It will fullfill your requirements and you can clamber all over it without any sales staff giving you a hard time.

Hi Chilli - we saw an advert in Dubizzle and bought privately from the local owner.

I do empathise with your pain...it took us what seemed like ages to find ours, although it was probably only really about 3-4 months. We looked at two seriously over that time, and bought the second one. We were very close to buying the first one, despite it being in lousy condition, and taking the hit on renovating it, as we weren't finding anything else that fit the bill.

As you've found, boats don't come up that often if you have a specific set of requirements and a modest budget. We wanted something not less than 23 feet long and with the ability to do 50ish mph, and it also had to look sleek and sporty and be less than 3 years old, with not too much 'Fishing boat' styling. And we only wanted to spend about 120,000dhs. In the end, we spent 125k and we did well...ours is excellent and we're really pleased with it. The only advice I can offer is patience I'm afraid. And maybe that the more you're able to spend the easier it is...you can always get a good searay in Abu Dhabi for 180-200k. That was too rich for us though.

There's a guy in the office that has an 18 foot speed boat with an outboard and trailer, which I think he was considering selling. If that's the sort of thing you're after and he still has it, I'll get the specs and ask him how much he wants for it.

Cheers,
J.

PS Sorry for the delay in replying...I've been back to Blighty so have been offline for a while!

Hello mate,

No probs, I appreciate it. I've since heard that it would be a lot cheaper to source them from the UK. So, Ebay is my friend and there are loads on there....currently waiting to hear how much it would cost to ship over.

If you ask your colleague that would be great...some pictures would be nice!

Many thanks again,

Nick.

Hi Nick - yeah, we looked at that avenue too...and particularly at importing from the US. We did the sums, and realised that we could get a boat of the same spec and age for a good 40% less, and have a choice of colours and specs...and even with the shipping, which was about $1000-1500 I think, it was still a good bit cheaper. But we were put off by having to send money abroad, trust the seller to describe its condition and then not actually see what you've bought in the flesh for 2-3 months! Photos hide a lot of problems, as we saw with that first boat, the Seadoo that we looked at. In the photos it looked great, but in the flesh it was battered. I wish you luck anyway....I will get you the details of my colleagues boat when he sends them to me.

Cheers,
J.

Hiya mate,

Totally understand, so I'll be getting family or friends to view before I buy.
Is that all is cost you, $1500 from the US? That's pretty good eh?

$1500 to ship a 25 foot boat from the US?

  • runs off to check boat-trader.....
I guess you would have to pay the 5% customs duty on the 'declared' value too though...

Hi ya - yeah, it wasn't too scary as I remember for shipping, although it may have been 1500 pounds rather than dollars (we worked everything in sterling)...and that didn't include the costs of shipping it to the port over land from the seller prior to the sailing. And yes, you're quite correct re the 5% of 'deemed' value for importing it. But even with all those factors, it still got you a newer boat of the same spec or one the same age for a lot cheaper than UAE prices...assuming there were any for sale over here.

There were so many steps involved and it all just put us off the whole idea really. But, as Chilli is able to get it inspected by a friend, it makes a lot of difference. if we could have found a jet boat in the UK we might have done the same...apart from anything else, I probably would have taken the time to fly home and look at it myself, hand over the readies and taken it away for shipping later from my house! smile

Well, the good thing for me is that I have someone in the UK that can look it over for me anddeliver it to where it needs to go. Then, this side I have a local who will cut through all the red tape and get it registered in no-time. Seems like a win/win. I feel a business idea coming on...

Hi Chilli - You still looking at boat purchase?

Guy at the office finally came back to me with everything except price. As follows:

"I am planning to sell the boat around Xmas time. But would consider November if he is very keen. What kind of budget does he have?

The boat is a 2009 Sea Ray 185 OB. It has a 150 HP Merc 2 stroke engine and now has about 65 hours. I am the second owner. It was new in May last year from Delma Marine in Al Bateen. I bought it from the first owner. At the time it had 10 hours on the engine.

I went for the OB as it is much lighter than the sterndrive so can be towed easily. Also it is simpler to maintain. It doesn’t have the bells and whistles of the inboard boats but my view is that is a good thing given how poor the servicing is out here.

The boat is very fast due to the oversized engine. It can get up-to 50 mph. The extra torque of the engine means you have to trim the engine to balance the steering. I was thinking about getting power steering but decided against it as once you have a feel for the trim you can get the steering balanced quite easily.

It has a ski pole. Coupled with the 150 HP engine it doesn’t have any problem pulling skiers or 5 people on a tube.

Here is a link to the Boat Test page

http://www.boattest.com/boats/boat_video.aspx?id=7...

And the Sea Ray Page

http://www.searay.com/Page.aspx/pageId/10232/pmid/...

Enough info?"

So that's that...if it sounds like something you'd consider, I'll ask him to tell me how much he's looking for.

Then, down near where my boat's moored, there's a Searay with a Stern drive with a For Sale sign on it. It looks like a 20 footer, so probably either an 195 or 210. It's got the 350 MAG Mercruiser sticker on the back, which means it'll be good for 50mph, and have all the posh bits too. I'm guessing he'll want 150-185,000 depending on how old it is...it looks in very good condition but I didn't have a proper look. Happy to stop by, check it out a bit closer and grab the phone number if you might be interested??

Cheers dude,
J.
