Got a couple of pics from my old man last night from when we lived out there in '85, as you can see its only changed ever so slightly...... hehe have hundreds more photos back home but mainly just of my parents and friends drunk.
If your new to Dubai it might take a while to get your head round these!!

Enjoy! Dunk.

Nice!

Next time I'm home, I'll have to have a dig about in our photos to try and find the ones we took in my first trip to the Middle East (Qatar) in 1977!

I was 8 hehe

As much as I still love Dubai I do miss how it used to be.

I first moved here in 86, it really was a complete utopia then, had 10 happy years here.

Expats were tolerated, no scratch that, welcomed!

Dunk, is 82 your year of birth?

How long did you live here?

Yep, 1982. Had my 5th bday there, we originally lived in desert springs and then moved out to RAK. 85/86 was the time we were there roughly, parents know the exact dates. We stayed for about 18 months. Photographic evidence from that era that i have unearthed in the family Harris archives suggest that 99% of that time was spent on Hash Hash Harriers runs, wadi bashing, parents and friends constantly drunk and my 1yr old brother sat in a bucket of water while i dug massive holes in the sand and decapitated dead sheep. Also watched alot of A-Team and Night rider and street Hawk and enjoyed eating at Hardies, which now sucks.

My dad worked for RAK Plastics (boat builders) Close friends to this day the Brinklies, Pete worked for Blue Circle cement.

There was a darts team too but cant remember the name!!

I'm the same age, and was there at the same time as you. Random!

We must have crossed paths then!? From what I can tell the expat community was pretty close, I wouldn’t say small. I don’t remember much from my time in Dubai, its when we moved to RAK that I have most of my memories from.

Jebil Ali sailing club as well was another hang out!

Yep, friend of ours had a speedboat at Jebel Ali, lots of pictures of the hotel (Sheraton?) there. We were only in Dubai for a few months, spent a couple of years in Abu Dhabi though. I missed Dubai because we had a Honda with flip-up lights, which was just the *best* thing when you're four.

Bloody hell must have crossed paths then! Did your parents like a drink or 5!? If the answer is yes then like myself you would have been left to you own devices to play in the sand!

We (my mum) had a Range Rover and then after that a short wheel base Patrol with big steel wheels and massive (when you're 5!) BF Goodridge shoes on them! Our friends mum had one exactly the same, colour everything apart from slightly different wheels.

Middle East, Range Rover, Nissan Patrol 1985-2010 nothing changes!!! smile

Amazing pictures, it would be cool to compare both modern and old pictures directly.

It's that picture of Desert Springs that gets me most.

It's still there, fenced in by the ever growing SZR, Metro, flyovers and the new towers of TECOM.

I had a look at the houses when I was picking my car up after abandoning it at the Belgian last weekend - I wonder who/what kind of people live there now. I'd love to think there's a few people who've lived there since it was new and never paid more than about 10k in rent!

Exactly, its pretty run down now as well, we (me, mum.dad) still can't belive its still standing!? I mean its got to be worth shed loads of money as far as land goes when you consider its location surely??

When we lived there SZR was two lanes and there was nothing but sand between us and the sea!!

From where it is I imagine the owner saw it as either a bit of a ransome strip or as a plot that'll be worth more when the rest is done. Not so sure that'll stack up for the next ten to twenty years now.
