Someone I know is moving to Qatar to work, and asked for my comments/tips. I sent this email, but my OH thinks it's not very nice, I thought I was being helpful!

I said:
A common theme with the Middle East for new arrivals is expectations vs reality - possibly a bit late now, but try to arrange and agree as much as you can up front, accommodation, car, hours, holidays, flights etc.

It's much easier if accommodation is provided for you, rather than housing allowances - at least for a year or so and you know what you want.

I don't know about Qatar but the UAE blocks access to things on the internet, like Skype. So if you want to use that for calling home (much cheaper/free) then make sure you install it before you leave and top up the credit. You can also get access back to the BBC iPlayer/4OD etc if you install a proxy service - it costs about £5/month I think.

Generally, you'll need to just be patient. Things in the Middle East are very beaurocratic and slow paced - the quality and competence of staff is much lower than the UK. It took me a little while to realise that I just had to lower my expectations, and realise what I could and couldn't change - once I stopped fighting, things became much easier!

You'll be going out straight into the peak Summer - so be prepared for the heat and humidity - also Ramadhan is coming up in August, which means half days but nothing is open. Try not to judge the place during Ramadhan, as it will improve.

Overall, during my time here I've had some very good times and some very bad but I'm glad I stuck with it and made it through.

Reading that back, it sounds a bit depressing, it isn't meant to be - but it's not all sunshine and cocktails.

Only the last comment reveals your sniggering superiority and loathng over his blind and youthful innocence...apart from that it's spot on!

Only kidding - he'll have had smoke blown up his arse by his recruiter and will be spending most of his time day-dreaming how he's going to spend his tax-free bucks so a does of reality might do him good. It's what mates are for.

Nope, I think thats pretty fair and spot on! Especially if his idea of the ME is only what he has seen or heard about Dubai. IMHO with Qatar and Bahrain people outside the ME have only heard of these places if they like F1 or that other sport with less wheels... (Chilli in 5 4 3 2...) smile

Also might want to let him know that its F'in expensive here with a big F. I think it is good to tell it like it is over here otherwise people might not give it a proper chance and just leave pi$$ed off.

As a newbie myself, I would say that is pretty much bang on target.

I would also say that there are some very good aspects to expat life out here that I wouldn't have expected before moving here. I don't mean the obvious things like sunshine, cheap petrol and lack of income tax but I was thinking along the lines of the more subtle aspects of daily life. Personally, I think the customer service is great over here, at least for the simple things like buying a coffee or filling your car up - I can't remember the last time someone addressed me as 'Sir' back home! Obviously this customer service doesn't apply to more important things which, as you suggest in your email, are still a total nightmare. Also, there's a much wider variety of different cuisine available here. I guess if you're from London, you can have anything you like but it's impossible to get Lebanese food in, for example, Newcastle-upon-Tyne.

So some good stuff and bad stuff, as with most things in life. smile

With regard to UAE I also think that people don't understand the "Salary" v "Salary, housing and car allowance" package thing and how that effects your gratuity or gratuity equivalant.

So they need to make a choice whether you want a large salary with no or few benefits which gives you the biggest payoff when / if you decide to leave or a smaller salary but will include housing and car benefits. I think most companies in the UAE are begining to move away from housing and car benefits or at least reducing them, as the UAE is not considered a hardship place anymore. I personally think the cost of living is very similiar to the UK once you take everthing into account.

I think I recovered it, and managed to carry on the toiletries theme!!

I said:
I also remembered that I was told that (UK) toiletries are hard to get hold of by my Manager – to be honest it’s not something I found a problem, but you might want to chuck a few extras in.

I don’t speak Arabic, aside from a few common phrases – greetings etc, but never found it a problem, everyone speaks (varying degrees of) English.

Petrol is very cheap, but telecoms in general are expensive – so try to pick up a local SIM card as soon as you can over there.

Things like customer service are pretty good generally, the staff are polite and you get a lot of things done for you that you don’t at home – e.g. they fill your car up for you.

If you wanted to get a maid, they are also pretty cheap – a few of the guys at work have a live-in maid, and it costs peanuts. More useful if you’re out as a family with young kids though.

When I look back at the issues I’ve had, in the grand scheme of things they’re not a big deal – it’s easy to turn into a whiney ex-pat without realising – when they deliver your champagne not quite cold enough, or the wifi reception around the pool isn’t very good, or the driver is late to pick you up in the morning. But when I look back, they’re pretty laughable – but your expectations and outlook adjust I guess.

Aside from that, I’m sure you’ll have a great time overall – let me know if you’ve got any other questions.

Good recovery, should also mention that if he smokes and is thinking of quiting to do it now before he gets here!! Kid in a sweet shop and all that! Also might want to mention to stock up in the duty free when he lands so he can at least have a beer when he gets to his new place. smile

Damn you lot and your memories! I actually hate Champagne, but that's not the point!

Anyways, if anyone is stuck for watching the World Cup, let me know as I seem to still have the channels, and you'll be more than welcome to come round....might even pop the bar-bee on.
