I have had an X5 for the last 3 years. Pretty much faultless, bar one or two minor trim issues, a replacement DVD player (under warranty), and a steering angle sensor. i-Drive display has played up once or twice so I'm hoping that doesn't go AWOL as that would be expensive and I'm out of warranty now.
I have the 5 yr/100k service package so costs have been tyres only, plus one or two minor things not covered by the package. All main dealers are crap because they run a monopoly and get away with it, but you already knew that.
Would have bought the Cayenne for the handling but needed 7 seats. Cayenne running costs for the turbo are stupidly high - be warned, I'd personally get the S instead. Note that the X5's back row is tiny and strictly for small and uncomplaining kids! Plus there's no air vents in the back row (makes a big difference in summer if you use all 7 seats). If you need the space get something else. Audi had some ridiculously cheap deals on the Q7 a few months back.
People swear by their RRs, but they also spend a lot on them when things inevitably go wrong. I'm not a Merc fan or owner so can't comment.

I bought a Tahoe for MrsOilydan to use for ferrying kids around and airport runs etc.
It is huuuuge inside, reasonably comfy, DVD ceiling mounted for the kids (with headphones), big V8 for me and costs peanuts to run.
Done 100K kms and no major problems (knock on wood!)
OK, it's not as fast, doesn't have the prestige or build quality of any of the big Germans but easily comparable to the Jap 4x4s for a heckuva lot less wedge.

The Land Cruiser/ Lexus version are the ultimate 4x4s. Very comfy and all the toys (esp the Lexus version), hence why the locals have them. Residual values are also outstanding and they don't break down. Ever. Just a bit dull to drive unless monstering cars in a straight line on the outside lane of Sh Zayed Rd is your thing.
Regarding deals on the Q7, to be honest I can't really remember, I just remember being really surprised when a friend told me the deal he got. I think it was maybe 10-15% below list for a fully loaded car, but I'm guessing now. Give the Audi showroom a call(I think it's Al Nabooda).

How about a left field choice: Volvo XC90. Very practical, lots of space, cubby holes, child booster seats, impact protection etc. Can be well specced with high quality interior.
Not the most fun car to drive but pretty reliable in my experience. Also a lot cheaper than an equivalent X5.

You will be better-off getting a Cheverolet Caprice SS and with the cash saved employ a driver to take you to and from work. That way you can work or read the paper in the car and don't actually waste 3 hours of your life every day crawlling over the National Paints Roundabout!Or
Get a microlight
Why are you wanting to live in RAK and work at DXB Airport?
The journey from RAK will be a daily nightmare. However, there is one saving grace, the Dubai Bypass Road which will allow you to miss the st-hole that is called National Paints area in Sharjah. Every morning there are accidents and/or chaos.
Seriously, if you have to do this drive daily, move to Mirdif (8km from DXB Airport), if you are forced to live in RAK, suggest you renegotaite your Housing Package.
Go to www.dubizzle.com to search for resale values of cars that you are looking for.
