Hi all - I'm liking it out here, and I've no plans as yet to return...but sooner or later, the job will finish and I will want to return home to Blighty. And I'm unlikely to want to leave my 'Stang here (when I've got it!).

I'd really prefer to take a few weeks and do a massive road trip home. I was thinking of driving across Saudi, into Jordan and then Israel. There to hopefully get a ferry etc across to Europe...hopefully southern Italy. And then drive up and home. Problems I can foresee are: -

1. Insurance to cover me and the car for the trip.
2. Visa's etc to drive through Saudi/Jordan/Israel
3. Car ferry services between Israel and Europe
4. General problems with locals and a shiny Mustang driven by a Brit...on his own
5. Availability of fuel on the way through
6. UAE/Saudi/Jordan immigration stamps in my passport when I enter Israel

I know you're all saying, "What a nutter...planning a trip like that" etc. However, I'm giving myself plenty of time to plan it. But I would be interested in anyone's experience of driving in Saudi/Jordan/Israel....and the huge distances between fuel stops. Has anyone done this kind of trip? Anyone got any thoughts on the other issues above? Or maybe I'm picking completely the wrong route?? Suggestions welcome.

I know I'll have to go to the Tasjeel here and de-reg the car for export. I'm assuming I can then drive in Saudi on my GCC cover insurance from UAE...will have to let them know of course. I wonder if you can get cover for Jordan as well?? I'm guessing it'll be hard to get cover in Israel from a UAE insurer. And then I need a UK insurer to cover me on Export plates while I drive it through Europe!! Should be a breeze....NOT!!

Cheers all,

J.

Hi mate,

i have also thought about doing this, lets go in convoy wink i think a good solution is to de reg the car and then ship to turkey, fly to turkey and get the car then drive back, i think it would avoid a few insurance issues amd visa issues, i am really thinking about it seriously when i leave although i will take a different car back then i have, i also believe you should own the car for 6 months in the uae to avoid import tax.

Cheers Rick

Hi Ricky...ah someone else with that insanity gene smile Would be great to have a companion...we should collaborate a bit on this. Thing is, I don't suppose we'll be lucky enough in our circumstances to both be going at the same time, but we could come to an arrangement about researching the best route...two heads etc.

Yeah, I think that's a good suggestion shipping to Turkey. I guess air freight might be a bit pricey though...any ideas how much??

I was starting to run out of ideas as there don't seem to be any car ferry services available any more. There might be, but it seems to be hard to find out without going to Egypt/Israel ports and asking! Also, I'm reading bad things about getting visas for going through Saudi.

YHM.
