pay-as-you-go mobile phones

My employer provides me with a company mobile phone and pays for all local calls. Unfortunately the phone does not have international roaming.

Are pay-as-you-go mobiles available in Abu Dhabi? I would only use it maybe twice a month to phone home or in the case of emergency.

They're certainly available in Dubai, so I would assume they would be in Abu Dhabi too. I paid 320AED for a sim card and base-model Nokia. You can buy the sim card on its own too.

there are only 2 providers, du and etisalat. Both have pay as you go service, my etisalat card does have roaming. Both have purchase fees but if you buy the du anniversary card you get free credits. Both cards have to be renewed every year and it costs about 100 aed. Du coverage is not so great but is cheaper for calls.
