returning to UK in the middle of Tax year and income tax
Discussion
Dear all,
I am not in automobile industry. Someone told me that I may get a good advice on this forum.
I have been working in Middle East for 8 years. Now planning to return to UK in summer 2021. I have read HMRC guidance regarding income tax in relation to UK expats and issue of tax resident and non-resident. If I return to UK in september 2021 and start working there, I think I will be considered as a UK tax resident (definition: anyone who is in UK >90 days and/or has worked for more than 30 days in UK is UK tax resident for that tax year).
Question is Do I have to file tax return? My understanding is that I have to do it and I will end up paying tax on my foreign salary from April - Aug 2021. Can someone confirm this please.
Many thanks and best regards,
Amin

I took advice from my accountant and didn’t declare my earnings from overseas when I moved back here from the ME 18 months ago. As far as he was concerned what I’d earned overseas was taxed at their rate (0%) and I started again once I returned.
You might want to check with an accountant, or just ignore it and hope for the best. The tax authorities don’t speak to each other so I can’t see where you’d have a problem.

You will file a return; you will elect for split year treatment; you should not pay tax on the money earned abroad. You should receive the full years personal allowancesI am not in automobile industry. Someone told me that I may get a good advice on this forum.
