Anyone with experience of importing a car from Turkey to UK?
Discussion
Firstly my apologies for putting Turkey in the Middle Eastern section - I couldn't see a better alternative.
I am a UK national living in Turkey and have a Turkish registered VW T5 transporter, over ten years old. I am planning to relocate back to the UK and want to import the VW. I have read about importing cars from non-EU countries on the UK government web site which explains the procedure quite well. However, it makes no mention of the fact that you may have to first de-register your car in the country that you are leaving.
A Turkish friend asked a "Trafik" office pal in Turkey how to export it and was told that I must de-register it, then they give you temporary number plates valid for 6 days which should be enough time for you to arrive at where you are going to.
So questions that I have are:

- Has anyone done it a different way, e.g. driving first to UK, then remove plates and fly back to Turkey with them and go to the Trafik office to de-register the car?
- If I have to use temporary plates where can I get insurance / green card insurance from?
