Right, here a few months now and getting settled, so will be looking to pick-up a used car over the next few months.

But what are the best places to keep a watch on ? Dubizzle, dubicars.com I know of - is there anywhere else worth keeping an eye on ?

Have two requirements - a daily, but also looking for interesting classics.

I meant to post this a while back but in Dubai eye radio a few weeks ago was the owner of carswitch who seem to have been recently setup. Now, this is in no way an advertisement as I've read no reviews on them but the concept seems ok. The claim to connect private buyers with private sellers. They inspect the car (I dont know if it can be relied on) and provide a report online. The prices to me seen fairly reasonable but I've only glanced through.

Big question remains on warranties however. They claim to provide a 3 month warranty however some adverts state a balance of manufacturer's warranty on some ads.

I'd not heard of CarSwitch before. I'll have to check it out.

Thanks.

Anybody any suggestions on where's best to search for classics ?

A lot of daily drivers on the expat facebook community pages jvc/ranches etc also the thousands of car at the import car souqs that are never advertised online

Interesting classic a lot of leg work and word of mouth and there are very few around, most local stuff is over proved it would be cheaper to import. I know of a Ferrari 348, MGB and Caterham that the owners would sell

I'd say dubizzle is the go-to website even if it is a bit crap. It does generate a lot of calls, usually revolving around 'last price'. Even if they haven't actually seen the car. There are a lot of bottom feeders out there.

If you're into Porsche, I'm aware of a nice Guards Red/Cream 993 auto for sale. The problem is getting insurance, unless it really is more than 20 years old and is actually registered as a classic.

Still green behind the ears when it comes to some stuff in the UAE, and this will be the first time I look into car insurance.

Without opening a can of worms anybody care to point me to a thread here with an accurate summation on the insurance situation ?

Generally fully comp is only available on cars up to 8 years old. This goes on model year/first registration rather than build date. As a guide you will pay 3-5% of the cars value. The car is covered not the driver unless you are needing to insure someone under (iirc) 21 in which case additional premiums apply. There are caveats placed on each policy - I.e older cars don't get main dealer repairs etc. Best insurers are taken to be Axa and RSA. If you have insurable assets (of all kinds lumped together) above 300k then RSA have a very well regarded HNW package.

The 8yr rule is generally taken to mean cars over that are 3rd party only. However RSA can still provide cover if you are on their HNW plan and recently a broker (green shield) has started offering it to anyone with a classic/performance car. E21jason (a few posts up) has his JDM 1991 f348 insured fully comp. with them and I'll be insuring my Canadian 2006 Elise with the same broker They had teething issues obtaining cover reliably which has now been sorted. Drop jase a pm for details.

I understand FC is achieved by both RSA and green shield using two policies - one for tpt&t and the other as a top up for accidental damage - in much the same way as your home insurance works. Hence the teething issues for them to get agreed definitions of what cars qualify. Best to check but I know both the above cars are ok even with the recent rumour that grey imports will no longer qualify for FC cover.

As always, pays to do your homework before committing to a purchase.

As for finding cars there are the sites already mentioned plus Facebook groups such as j.a.c.c.k (Jebel Ali cool car klub), plus there are a few dealers of classic cars around. High end being tomini, reasonable/interesting being al hai on Salahuddin Street. Word of mouth and being in the right place at the right time is usually the way though, well priced interesting cars don't hang around long. There's lots of interesting stuff around but most of it will be hidden away until summer ends.

Al hai had a really cool Renault alpine a310 which someone on here needs to buy. Haven't been up there in a while but they are deffo one of the more interesting dealers around.
