Colleague is doing the below to get to and from UK over Xmas, my Wife says they'll void the second leg of first trip, anyone done this?

Return Manchester - DXB booked at UK prices.

Manc - DXB leg is 8th December, she is in DXB now so won't get on this flight.
DXB - Manc leg is mid December, she'll use this return as outward leg

Manc - DXB one way booked to get home

Surely they can't make you get on a plane?

Will they actually void the return part of the first trip if she doesn't?

They will know she never checked into the outbound flight and genuinely could stop her getting on the return. Not sure of the easiest way get round it though

Yeah I just checked with a mate who works for them, he said the same.

If you do not use the "outbound" leg of a flight they will not let you use the "return" ticket. Period.

Is the unanimous opinion.

She will be pleased, she's already booked the flights hehe

Maybe they could go via Mumbai to save some cash!

http://m.arabianbusiness.com/emirates-overcharges-...

We have been looking into flights back to the UK and for the sake of going before Xmas, it's ott.

I also noticed Qantas were offering the same flights (exact same time, day) for a shed load cheaper.

May have now gone but for a family of 3 (return) it was just over 6000dhs

Absolutely, buried in the terms and conditions of ticket sale is a clause actively allowing them to do this.

When I moved to DXB the first flight back to the UK I did I booked as a single, that allowed me to make all future bookings as returns from the UK, saved me thousands over the next 4 years.

As an aside, many people also don't bother to take the last leg of a multi journey ticket... airlines note this as well and if you do it too often they'll refuse you carriage (the common one from DXB is flying to New York from Sri Lanka (DXB-CMB-DXB-JFK-DXB-CMB) where people don't bother taking the final leg from DXB-CMB)

The way its done is to book a free stopover in Dubai on the return leg, that way your baggage isn't checked all the way.

Interestng isnt it. I've falled foul of this. my plans changed and need to drop the first leg, but use the return. Someone tipped me off, and I rang the airline, they confirmed.

The person who tipped me off, had been caught out at the airport and unable to get on the plane. They had resold the seat.

Crazy but done to protect prices I understand.

UAE is nearly the most expensive place to fly from - its all crazy.

EK are simply not worth it IMO, plus I don't fly enough to take advantage of their loyalty programme.

Booked Qatar from DXB-LHR this morning to get home for Christmas, 1700 chips, easy.

Then another 240 quid Stockholm - DXB on the 2nd of Jan to get home (spending a few days post Xmas and over NYE in Sweden)

I had the same with KLM.

Booked a return from Heathrow to Schipol. The night before I was in Bristol and Heathrow was covered in snow and ice. Bristol was fine so rather than risk delays at Heathrow I booked a single from Bristol with EasyJet on the assumption I could still use the KLM return.

When I arrived at Schipol to get the return flight KLM told me that because I hadn't flown out with them I couldn't use the return back.

If the first flight is not taken then the whole itinerary will be cancelled and the money lost. She'll have to find a cheap one-way to Manchester then take the inbound as booked.

I checked for Manchester - all are double the cost than flying into London and so I am one of their "captive audiences" as it will cost more and far longer to fly into London and then train it to B'pool.

frown

One day it might become the same price but I won't be holding my breath.

The plot thickens...

She's today been advised by both EK and her travel agent (apparently people still have those) that she only needs to pay an 80 quid no show fee for the first leg and all will be well.

Will update in Jan whether it actually worked for her hehe

Airlines don't seem to like you travelling one way. I was looking flights between LBA and AMS and had KLM and Jet2 as options. Theoretically the cheapest was outbound with KLM and return with Jet2, based on the prices given by each airline as parts of a return trip, but what was £145 return with KLM became over £800 if I just wanted to buy a ticket from AMS to LBA!

You might want to advise her (and her travel agent) to double check that.... I've just had a quick browse of EKs general terms of carriage and I noted a clause stating that an £80 no show fee will be withheld from any refund issued due to non-flight..
Given that you only get a refund on a higher class (fare bucket) of ticket, if she's booked a "flex" economy or a business/1st class ticket then the agent could well have got their wires crossed.

Happened to me on an emirates flight to Riyadh, had to change timings on the outbound leg however there was no availability with emirates so I bought a one way with another airline thinking could use the emirates return leg. Nope as I had not flown outbound it was no longer valid when i got to check in, so I had to buy another one way flight back.

I've given up, if she wants to believe what she is told then good luck to her!

I think she is going to get a very nasty surprise when she tries to check in for her DXB-MAN flight in mid-Dec then.
