Gents,
So I have sold the Raptor and am now looking to the next workhorse, I'm having naughty thoughts about an C63 looking at a 2009-2010 vintage so pre-face lift.
Does anyone have experience running a C63, or know someone who does?
Any suggestion of the best place to get a pre purchase inspection done?
Thanks,

Thanks,
I have owned some of the previous AMG C Classese and loved em.
However, since driving the newer C63, RS6, M3 and M5 I would say this.
The C63 is a hoon mobile, no doubt. If you want a laugh, want to get the back out and have a nice sounding and looking car then go for it. I am sure you know that a large percentage have been ragged to death here (Which isnt the end of the world as its a strong engine) but therefore, the key is to buy one with good servicing. Around 60% of all the C63's out there are American Spec as you may well already know, which although tempting as the multi spoked rims are the nuts, I wouldn't touch. I have heard many from the USA being clocked, none really have history from there, some are stolen and of course possibly crashed.
If you can get a GCC Spec one with those awesome spoked rims, with good service history and which hasn't clearly been ragged by a 20 year old then I think its a winner. The engine is pretty bullet proof, so out of this range I would say the C63 or M3 is the best option. (As the Audi's RS's arent cheap to service when they are long in tooth...and I have an RS6 and can testify to that...although I do absolutely love it. Main reason for cost is that if you have an oil leak on an RS4 or RS6 then basically you have to drop the engine...almost every time. That's 6k minimum there, whereas with the M3 or C63 its easier to work on. Still costly, but better than the Audi.
Although you do give some things up in the C63. As below notes:
C63: Pros
Great Engine
Looks proper hard
Is a hoon mobile
Can take kids to school
Cons:
Gearbox is prehistoric. If you drive one you will see what I mean. Very slow to change compared to others of same year and in same class
Interior isnt the best (Audi and BMW are better)
Servicing aint cheap...however there are a lot of after market service places that are good...Silber Arrows etc.
Difficult to find one which hasnt had the tits ragged off of it.
M3: Pro's
Legend
Lots here
Reasonable servicing if you go to aftermarket place (Autohaus etc)
Most have great warranty and service packs (Although 5 years max, so you may miss that)
If you are buying cash you can get a deal as most M3 owners love a bit of Finance...so you can get a deal if buying cash as loads of younger chaps buy them.
Cons:
You have the rag the hell out of it to get performance (Unlike with the C63...which has loads of torque)
AGMC are the most annouying and rip off dealer in the world
Difficult to find a 4 door.
Audi RS4/6:
Best Interior in class by far
Rapid
Looks the nuts
Great handling/safety (If you have kids)
Once you get one you will keep it a long time. They are great cars.
Cons:
Servicing is painful, really painful.
its not RWD, which means you cant piss about and get the back end out and be a kid.
Not many out there to choose from
All in all, if I were to get a C63 I would get the 507...the last of the C63 engine. Granted, its a 2013 or 14, so its a lot more. But I think if you look after it then it would retain value quite well. It also looks the nuts and sounds awesome as it has a different pipe on it etc.
Hope that helps mate. All in all, given the year/money you want to spend the C63 does tick a lot of boxes. Just be sure to get a good one with service history and which has the pads, discs and tyres done recently or you will easily bleed 30k on getting that little lot done.
Cheers
Luke

...and I would get it checked at either Silber Arrows or Gargash. I ALWAYS get a car checked before buying, its the best money anyone will ever spend when buying a car. Plus, they always find something, which means money off the main price, so you end up getting more money off anyway.
Will admit after driving a 507 I was hooked, the engine is an utter sledgehammer of a thing, and the noise!
However the suspension was beyond a joke as was the seat comfort, im slim as in very very slim but even those seats squeezed my shoulders so much I was almost in pain after 20 minutes of driving it.
Think a standard C63 with more comfortable seats, sensible suspension and still that noise would be a lovely thing to live with. A wagon would be ideal, but doubt they even imported wagon GCC ones.

Luke,
Thanks for your insight, I have it tossed up between the M3 and the C63. I have owned a RS Audi (RS$) when I was in the UK and it was a pleasure to own but as you say the 4wd make it a bit tame, not a problem in the UK as it was welcome after driving the TVR especially in the wet.
I am giving myself a 100k budget so the newer C63 are out of budget, I need to drive a C63 and see if I can get on with the slushy auto. It will be my daily and having the Clio as a track car I'm thinking I can live with the auto. If not then I will fall back to the M3 either DCT or manual.
Thanks for the PPI garage recomendations, I'd defo get an inspection done prior to any deal.

assuming the plan is still to get an SUV for your mrs, i don't see why you want/need 4 doors mate?
m3 in manual is a good choice but you have the clio for track.
why not suiting more GT-ish? high powered rwd fun in sport mode yet all the toys and comfort for the daily commute?
keeping rough budget the same and going on condition/value over age all these look decent to me:

http://tnydu.biz/DOsYXm
also if you can get over your prejudices a manual 997 carrera 2 should also be on the list and a far better car than the m3 surely? or a decent 996 turbo if you can find one.

i think the jag with a sports exhaust btw. oily's xfr sounded amazing with one, equally the aural calibre of the c63 but far better looking car.

There's about four C63's on dubizzle when I checked just now that are Japanese imports. I'd go for one of these over a local or US spec one as its more likely to have been looked after. Ask for the auction sheet from the seller to see if there has been any panel damage. One or two of them were grade 4.5 cars which means they are close to new condition.
Sam,
Sorry to go off-topic, but what sort of demand did you have for your Raptor?
I'm smoking a '12 US import Raptor at the moment and, whilst I love the noise it makes and its character, it's a frankly awful thing to drive anywhere other than off the top of a dune at 90mph.
Would swap for a Cayenne Tubby in a heartbeat.
As for the Merc/BMW/Audi conundrum, well, I'd have a C63 in a nanosecond if it wasn't for my need to take the mutt to the beach of a weekend. Do it.

Mr Tourette,
The Raptor sold in a couple of months, lots of last price type phone calls - eventually sold to a local (who was looking or a car that hadn't been owned by a local...)
As Shirt rightly said my Mrs will be getting a SUV/4x4 once her Evora sells for dog walking, race car towing duties.
Shirt,
I had looked at the Jags, but I can't say I'm a fan maybe I need to drive one.
Re the imported C63s I have seen them on dubizzle, I have yet to see any with the Performance Pack - from what I have read the C63 needs the LSD.

Very useful advice. I see a lot of imported bikes for sale here too. One would assume that the same auction grading applies to two wheels two?Great thread - I'm in a similar situation, but I'm keeping the F150 so functionality isn't too much of a concern.
I've been eyeing up an XK, but the other options listed here are interesting too and I hadn't given too much thought to them. Problem with the XK seems to be a lack of supply.
I'm off to do some more browsing, keep the suggestions rolling!

My Raptor recently shat its steering pump and Premier took a whole month to properly sort it, somehow managing to damage the main crank seal in the process. Frankly terrifying ineptitude.
A decent ford specialist in AUH would be a god-send.

I've used Premier thus far as it's still under warranty. I've heard other peoples horror stories, but I've only had good experiences to be honest! My Raptor recently shat its steering pump and Premier took a whole month to properly sort it, somehow managing to damage the main crank seal in the process.
