car insurance for when in UK
Discussion
Two points, which I've recently become aware of after several years as an expat.
1. Your UK driving license becomes invalid once you are twelve months non-resident.
2. I use Day Insure insure my car in the UK, they let you insure for short periods, and accept you as an expatriate. It's about £26 a day.

Good to know - we are back in London for a week in August and was thinking of renting a car to see some sights outside the capital. On the license element, all the above seems to be correct. We've just got international licenses, which is basically a translation of the UAE license, the sad part is its only valid for 12months, and is about 120dhs and a phaff to get.
We are going to hire on our UAE license in the UK, but have been asked for international license in Italy. A lot depends on the hiring company. Holding a UK license, even if not valid, does help in certain circumstances as it shows you are familiar with UK roads. For example a French driver is higher risk in UK, than a UAE driver with a UK license too.
