Just a quick note - sometimes hard drives 'appear' to have failed, within either the PC they reside or the external box if it's a USB drive.
However, if the naked drive itself is removed and placed into a suitable receiver, it can be spun up and the contents read / saved.
For example, I have this unit, made by 'Sharkoon' but there are lots of different kinds available. I have easily read the contents of seemingly 'dead' hard drives this way on many occasions...
