So I'm bored of driving the Nissan Sunny rental and the sale of my Caterham back home looks like it's going through.

So what should I do? I am looking at a Porsche or a BMW, looking around 60k AED which seems to get a cayman s, 996 carerra or m3 on dubizzle but not sure where I should start really. Any advice is appreciated. smile

I'm no expert but at that end of the market I would have thought you have a high chance of buying a dog that has seen better days

Servicing and parts will be on the higher side, Im sure someone will come along who owns something of that vintage and give you an idea of proper running costs

I'd imagine a Cayman would be your best bet, but look out for bore scoring on the S. For 60k you'd probably get a decent E46 M3 but they don't come up that often. 996's are a mixed bag. Lots of dogs but some good ones like this http://tnydu.biz/DOrMvM . Other option would be a Subaru/Toyota BRZ/GT86, which makes a lot of sense for reliability if it's your only car. They are cheap out here, especially as a manual. Cheap enough to add a cheeky turbo kit in time.

this sounds like a thread for jase and i. if there's a PHworthy car on dubizzle under 60k which we don't know about then it must mean we're both busy at work!

a cayman at 60k will be tired, good ones seem to start around 90 and even they can be rough around the edges. boxsters are a good deal cheaper and usually less miles.

e46's are are thin on the ground, normally uncared for and usually for sale with more miles than the millennium falcon at a price far beyond their worth. m5's can be had at similar money in v8 or v10 format:

gt86 is a good shout for cheap reliable motoring, i've seen them as low as mid 40's and well modified ones under 60. also plenty of manual v8 mustangs under budget if they're your thing.

if you choose wisely and find a good indie for servicing you can get a lot of car for your money. just bear in mind that decent quality enthusiast cars at this price point are hard to find and will likely need a bit of tlc.

lastly, the clio v6 is still for sale at al hai after i looked at it, wanted it but bought the elise instead. its a jap import and has been stood in the showroom 2 years but could be had for under 60 easily. exterior is pretty mint apart from scuffing on an aftermarket CF splitter and the inside just needs a good clean. nice leftfield car which will hold its money and you won't see another on the road.

Saw a black one on Hessa street about a week back, I nearly caused a crash from staring at it!

i think that one lives in JLT. there's 3 silver ones that i have seen for sale over the years, all mk1's.

flawed gem but tons of road presence, awesome soundtrack and none of the shortcomings [namely wet handling and lack of outright b-road prowess] will be an issue in the uae. i like them a lot.

Spotted a Silver one up for sale not long after moved here but yes very rare sight all round.

Not exactly quick in a straight line but as you say nice noise and presence for the size of it cant be beaten.

Clio V6 probably isn't an option unfortunately, bit too 'Boy Racer' if I am visiting clients..

BMW M5 is a nice shout though! I hadn't thought of it or looked at them but I love the sound of the v10 and shouldn't have too many reliability worries unlike the IMS/RMS Porsche engine. Thanks for the input & suggestions. Shirt I will most likely PM you once the caterham has sold for some suggestions if its okay with you smile

no worries, although if you even mention offshoring my pension i will hurt you!

not sure what help i can be. jase and i just usually send each other emails full of cars we want but never go and see. like a private what car musings thread. passes the time.

that m5 is being sold by the same place velocitas is buying his r8 from, so he may be able to give some insight there. if you don't mind auto then rangerovers, cayenne's etc. are getting cheap. non amg mercs also cheap, a few tidy sl500's around for under 50k
