Looking into booking a holiday for me and the wife...

Singapore or Maldives

Singapore looks a big city, never been before but looking on trip advisor there doesn't seem to be much attractions I'm interested in.

Maldives would be a go and lie on your back for a entire time but its just a minefield of hotels, all with mixed reviews. Does anyone have any experience of a quite hotel in Maldives ?

Thanks for help

Standard answer - Sri Lanka. By far the best place to go from Dubai. Cheap flights [circa 1200 dibs with etihad] and just a purely stunning, varied and beautiful country.

What are you interested in that Singapore doesn't have?
I've been there a fair few times now and I love the place, most recently went for a week's holiday in August 2014

There's so much to do there I still have things that I haven't crossed off the list

Seychelles mate.
10 Times better than the Maldives if you want my opinion.

Cheaper, sae flight time (May even be less) and loads of lovely islands. Also, all the staff are Africans and Saffers, which I like a nice change from the usual customer service here...where everyone says "Yes yes yes" and you know they didnt listen to a word.

We rented on a place called Eden Island on the main island of Mahe. Awesome. Check Airbnb. 5 star apartment rental with cleaners everyday. No need to get a pain in the arse boat or another plane to an island.

You feel like you are getting ripped off in the Maldives. Its made for honeymooners and they charge you for everything.

Thanks for advice.

I suppose, I see Singapore is a massive city, I look at the top 'attractions' and we have stuff like National Orchid Garden, Cloud Forest, Singapore Botanic Gardens, Gardens By The Bay, Singapore Zoo, Marina Bay, MacRitchie Nature Trail, Waterfront Promenade, Kranji War Memorial.... none of which make me think LETS BOOK IT...QUICK!!

I understand Trip Advisor doesn't explain it all but it gives a rough idea of what people like doing there because they take the time to rank it and leave comments...

Ideally I would go to New York but the prices have doubled in price in 2 months which puts me off obviously!

Thanks again

Different tastes I guess, I've done all of the things you list (excluding the botanical gardens) and really enjoyed them all... Kranji especially is well worth the visit.
There are also great bars, boat trips, bus trips, fantastic food, colonial history, good shopping and a whole lot of other things to do.

That said, I'd rather New York as well, I've been there 6 times now and absolutely love the place.
A tip on the flights to New York for you, if you don't mind a little transit it is a lot cheaper to fly to JFK from Columbo. (saves an average of 8,000aed on a business class fare.)
Get yourself a cheap one way to CMB on a Lo Cost carrier, hit the EK flight to JFK (which goes via DXB) and on the return leg, get off the plane in DXB and don't bother boarding the last DXB-CMB flight.
Just remember to book it so that you have a stopover in DXB on the return otherwise your baggage will be checked all the way through to CMB and that would be a pain!!

Yup - lovely place. Extraordinarily clean when you've been used to India.
