i got a lovely text from dubai police xmas morning informing me of a 2k fine and that i have to attend my nearest police station within 30days. seems i jumped a red light on beach road.
i guess the attendance is so they can issue black points and confiscate my car. qns:
1] anyone know what length of time they'll keep it for? i am going away on the 3rd jan so its not a huge inconvenience.
2] do they take the car there and then or do i deliver/collect? i'd want it covered up and out of the way as i hardly doubt they'll give it a courtesy wash.
3] how much am i looking at to avoid the impound?

Shirt,
I have had my car impounded before, however the rules may have changed. And I was speeding.
If I remember correctly you can pay 100 and per day of impound to prevent it. I paid 2,500 instead of 25 days impound, as I didn't want the car sitting in the sun for 25 days. mine was more than 50% over the speed limit. not sure for red light, or if you are allowed to pay to prevent impound. they are pretty tight on red lights nowadays.

you're not wrong, i though the fine alone was punishment enough! they're really paranoid about it now they have the tram though.
weather's ok for it to be left there and 3k is hard to justify on top of the fine. i just don't want the car being damaged as i can imagine what their attitude towards that would be.

I had exactly the same thing a year or so ago. They had a very clear video of it which they showed me (twice). Then got a stern telling off, 8 black points and 800 fine. Plus 14 day impound which I avoided for 100 per day. So 2300 all in. IIRC I would have had to leave the car with them there and then. Good luck...
I had the old Jeep impounded on the spot for 7 days for an apparent dangerous manoeuvre and failing to renew my registration.
I was told to follow the Police Prado to the impound lot next to MoE - and in the time it took to get from DIP to MoE, he'd pulled over someone else so we had a little convoy going.
Once there, I was relieved of my keys straightaway and told to come back in a week to clear the fine (for the manoeuvre) and get the keys back. I was told the Jeep would stay in the impound lot there as it was short stay.
7 days later, I head to the Police station next to the lot, pay my fine etc and was then informed that my Jeep was actually in Qusais and not parked outside. Apparently they were a bit full when it was impounded and so it was driven onto a car transporter and taken to the back of beyond.
A long old schlep followed to the edge of the Sharjah border to the impound lot. Go into the portacabin show my papers, and am given a key - to a Range Rover. Explain that whist it's a nice gesture to give me a Range Rover for my troubles, I was actually there for my Jeep. After much head scratching and rummaging around boxes of keys, my key was found.
Then it was just a matter of walking out over the vast waste ground to find my car which was parked up behind around 2000 others (it's a huge lot and it was about 20percent full). Eventually get to the Jeep to find the battery dead, the window down and the car full of dust.
Calls to recovery and garages ensued and a few days later I was back on the road down about 2k in all.
