New Year's Day in Dubai
Discussion
Not confirmed yet but I may be traveling to Dubai to work on NYE. So there will be a day of rehearsals, the actual event then a day off on Jan 1st before flying back on the 2nd.
Went to Hong Kong via Dubai airport in '82 so I'm sure it's changed a bit
What should I do with my day?
I do fancy a trip up the Burg Khalifa to beat my current record height of The Empire State and my young son will go made if I don't take pics of myself up there but I know it's pricey and it would waste precious hours when I could be doing something more fun.
Bet the job gets cancelled now

It needn't waste that much time... book an advance ticket for around lunchtime then you can have lunch in one of the mall cafes at the same time... 2 for the price of one!!
As far as the rest of your day goes, I'd advise you do what I did when I first came here for one day, take the open top bus tour and hop off at points that interest you, it's the best way of seeing as much of Dubai as possible without messing around with taxis or driving yourself.

If booking Burj Khalifa, book it now, like, today! I know for bookings it's currently 3-4 week in advance, especially if you want pick of the time slots. I can only imagine that NYD will be packed due to the amount of tourists in town.
Another suggestion is a late afternoon/evening (sunset) Khalifa visit, so at least you then get dinner at Dubai Mall and see the fountains (which play at night).
Open top bus is a great idea. Get off in Bur Dubai for a walk around the oldest part of town. Never been to the museum down there but can spend hours walking around the Souks, although the pestering to buy st gets a very old, very fast.

I remember the good old days where AED 100 used to get you the Ritz Carlton which was all on it's own...

That's ludicrous unless it's a free bar. Are there any public beaches?http://www.jumeirah.com/en/hotels-resorts/dubai/ma...
