So Friday night saw the regular bright flash in my eyes. Third one since I have been here, so fairly used to the process now, and was waiting for the text message to arrive today.

Around 1730 the text comes through, but rather than the standard 600 fine, it states there are 3 Fines for 2400! I definitely know I was flashed once on the Al Khail Road, but don't remember any others. So I get on the rta Fines website, and there is the 600 Al Khail fine + obligatory 10 knowledge fee. Nothing else.

I check the police fine website and that shows the same. Anyone seen this happen before? Am I supposed to look elsewhere? The text does give me a Google app to download, but think it is just a mobile version of rta app so think it will be the same.

Anything I should be concerned by?

Also should I pay these as I go along, or save them up and pay at vehicle licence renewal?

Is there anywhere I can go and read where the cameras are? I have had 5 speeding Fines in the UK in 21 years driving, and 3 (or perhaps 5!) in less than 3 months here.... All at night and aside from 1 I wasn't being a dick!

Cruise control has saved me a fortune, I racked up 8 grand or so year one, think I've had 1 speeding fine in the following 6 years.

Assume they are on every road, the mobile ones are everywhere on Al Khail at the moment, I am always passing them on way to and from work.

Trust me I understand not breaking the limit is the way to stop this happening!

It is familarizing myself with the limits, whilst also trying to predict who is trying to cut across me, and also where I am supposed to be going without getting lost! I am sure it will all become clearer over time. No good me setting cruise control if I am not aware of the limit for that stretch of road. I have turned on the overspeed warning limit on the car - I know it will not be 100% as the limits may have changed from what they were when the sat nav was last updated. It should help a bit though.

All fines so far (or the 3 I am sure of!) have been between 21 and 30 kph over limit.

2 x Hessa Street - 1st time I thought it was a 100 limit, and it was an 80. 2nd time I thought (from first time) it was an 80, and it was a 60. Both times at night, and I had not spotted the limit.

1 x Al Khail. I knew it was 100, but I decided to overtake a car, and pushed to around 130. Then was slowing down as the flash went off. My fault entirely.

My question is more around the text message for 3 x fines, and then only seeing 1 x fine on the site. Anyone come across this before? Also whether I should pay fines immediately, or pay at end of year. Any advantage/disadvantage either way?

Don't trust the sms system from Dubai police, its all over the place.

Pay the fines as you go, paying a big lump sum can't be a great feeling. Emirates NBD have a good payment service on their online banking.

I passed that new style one on Al Khail a few nights back near the D65 turn off, not a car in sight and the cruise set at 105, two lanes from the fast lane and the thing flashed, not had a text admittedly but I have no clue as to how or why it would flash. No cars passing on the other side either.

So another fine received yesterday. What made it worse was when I logged onto the site I found another one from Abu Dhabi from November! I am going to need a payrise this year just to cover speeding fines. That is 5 in 5 months.

At least the AD one was only 300dhs and no knowledge fee! - and it was 41kph over the limit smile

I do have a question I have been thinking about.

You get the 100/120 limits shown on SZR etc. This means I drive at 120/140 respectively (I think I need to drop to 115/135 respectively as I am obviously too close to the limit). However you then get a random 140 MAX sign (there is one by the petrol station on the way to AD, and another on the 66 towards Al Ain). Does this mean I can drive at 160? Or is it reminding me that the previous 120 allows me to drive at 140?

This may be where I am going wrong......

the max you can do any any highway with a 120 speed limit is 140km/h. 140km/h stated is the max with the 20km/h buffer already built in.

years ago, the Dubai - AUH road was 140 with a max of 160km/h, but a few large accidents soon reduced that back to 120/140.

The AUH fine, when paid on-line is reduced by 50%. Your actual fine is 600, but reduced to 300 with the discount.

you should count yourself lucky. if you recall my thread from late December, that resulted in a 2k fine plus 3k to avoid a 30day impound. all for a [i think] quick weave around slower traffic at the beach road/hessa st junction.

I must be doing something wrong I think... I've had one speeding fine in 4 years and well over 100,000km of driving in the middle east and I don't exactly hang about!

I racked up 10,000 AED in speeding fines last year. Not clever.

Watch out for the small speed cameras on tripods - Al Khail road. Also the police cars on various bridges overlooking SZ and Al Khail.

Just checked mine and found 2K of fines only one of which I got a text for. That was fair enough; as soon as I saw the flash I realised I was over the limit, but I know I didn't get a text for the others. Hopefully no more hiding and waiting to be uploaded..
