Buy a classic car here for shipping to UK
Discussion
Hi guys,
I've spotted a lovely old car which I'd like to buy and ship home to the UK, to be my project when I finally go back to the UK.
The car was imported from the US but was never registered in the UAE by the guy who imported it...and I presume that this was either done with Wasta or so long ago that the import rules weren't so strict.
I'm guessing that I'll need to register it myself in AUH before being able to export it to the UK. Has anyone on here had any experience of this? Any idea what documents I'll need from the current owner? He's got the customs papers...he's a local obviously and it's sometimes hard to understand him or make my questions understood (like when was it imported!). I'll be taking an Arabic speaking friend the next time I go so I can ask proper questions...
Any advice would be appreciated.
Thanks,
J.

Can't speak for the classic angle and AUH may be different but my Ferrari came in from Japan in 2000 and was never registered on the road here.
When I came to buy it in 2013 all the seller had was a small piece of paper entirely in Arabic that was the import and customs certificate. That was enough for RTA and after the standard Tasjeel inspection it was registered in my name with no further costs to pay.

I know a guy based in Dubai who knows this process inside out and back to front, he has worked in logistics here for years, he can sort everything from registering the car to sending it to the UK for you.
Usually he deals with shipping all sorts of rare cars from private collections locally but he does all sorts. He helped me export my race car from Dubai to Qatar with nothing more than the origional import invoice....do you want his info?

If he doesn't, I would... I have a cunning plan to send the donkey back to Blighty at some point in the fairly near future, would be good to do it through someone who knows the score.Usually he deals with shipping all sorts of rare cars from private collections locally but he does all sorts. I did it last year with my Porsche, took about 10 minutes with the RTA who gave me an RTA Export Letter, inspection, then new blue export plates and I had to have a special 14 day insurance cert.
Then drove down to docks and put in container, sign a import form for UK customs ( a C110 I think) with the shipper.
Extract from container in UK, insurance on the VIN number, then drive home. Once you get a clearance note from Customs, register with DVLA and MOT.
The Dubai end was done well, but the UK receivers where rubbish, I had a broken door handles and some paint chips etc on the car when I went to pick it up.

Mind if I ask what the cost was... I'm still at the stage of working out if it's viable but finding hard figures on the total cost is proving difficult. Then drove down to docks and put in container, sign a import form for UK customs ( a C110 I think) with the shipper.

The cost for shipping the car was around 6000 AED from memory, then around 400 AED for the documents, number plate, insurance from RTA.
UK side just MOT and insurance on the VIN around £400 in total.
I had to sign a form saying I owed the car for more than six months outside UK before getting a clearance letter from customs which is need to register the car with the DVLA, plus a current MOT which they will do on the VIN, plus a letter from Porsche saying when the car was built ( for the correct emission test).
