Took the kids down to the JBR beach on the weekend and out on the headline, there is a truely gigantic tracked crane (no photos at present). At a guess, the boom has to be at least 30 storeys up.

Anyone on here know more about it or what it is doing? I am curious to know what is being lifted that needs such massive lifting capacity

Oh, i thought you meant that it had fallen down!

Probably nothing but being Dubai, it has to be the biggest. Actually, probably a monumental feck-up by some PM who wanted a fridge-freezer lifted into an apartment.

Yes it's for the Dubai Eye which ... in true Dubai style ... is 2 1/2 times bigger than the London Eye ... already estimated to be 2 years late ... and 3 times the original budget.

I hope not, i'm looking forward to it. The London Eye takes about 35 minutes to go round, so either the Dubai version takes 1hr 45mins, which will be dull, or it will rotate at 3 times the speed. Which will be great fun watching people trying to get into a capsule moving at 2.5 feet per second.

Mammoet are doing the job I believe.

The massive crane is not for the heavey weight but for the distance the lifts are done from the crane.

Dubai I is one of my projects and lets say some the stuff that comes up from he client side in the meetings is quite entertaining. As foe the size it is just under 2 times bigger than the london eye but most importantly bigger than the High Roller in vegas.

Please make it so the bottom of the wheel is underwater, that would be entertaining.

Would be funny if Dubai had to be bailed out by Tokyo in the future.

They could rename it the Japs I.

Noticed this from the palm the other day (only just returned back from the UK), and it is pretty bloody big.

The view from the wheel is not going to be all that is it? One side JBR and the other side a aluminium plant and power station!
