It has become apparent from my frequent looking at Dubizzle, that I am not going to find the cars that I want in the timeframe that I need to find them. I think I have said before I want a F150 Raptor, and either a Camaro/Mustang/Challenger for the wife eventually. However I want to take my time to find the right one, and not be rushed into buying the first one I see etc.

However I do need a car to get around in the meantime. I have a rental car coming this week for a month to get me around, but the price soon stacks up.

I was thinking this morning I need to get a temp car, that I can easily sell on later for not much loss in value. We can get by with only one car, so when my wife gets here we can look in earnest for her car, and sell the temp car. I can then look for the F150 for me. Also cash flow is going to be tight until salaries start to come in, and finances unravel in UK. So what car?

It needs to be reliable
It needs to be reasonably interesting
It needs to be sold on having not lost much money
I would like budget to be below AED75k. AED50k would be even better.

So what should I be looking for with this criteria?

Thanks

You want a unicorn, I am sure you can get them in sharjah,

for that money you might get a manual Cayman or a z4m. Really depends on what you think interesting is common from the UK a cheap mustang is interesting

But it will be tee total won't it? If I get a unicorn, I want it to at least be able to have a beer with me.

Sorry - not for me. Would be a good shed of the week on PH - but i'm afraid it does nothing for me. Looking for something a bit newer than that. I was still at school when that car came out, and that was a long time ago. I'd rather spend my money here:-

Anything a bit newer, preferably auto as well?

There is a cadillac sls exactly like mine for sale on dubizzle.

I would offer half that (seriously!) and they are a bargain.

I love mine and as you can see from my garage history, it is up against some fairly serious barges!

Loaded with features but no head up display

You are welcome to see mine if that helps. Am just across from difc near metro station

I wouldn't take the risk tbh, drop 10,15 whatever on a well looked after Yaris/Sunny/City etc that will run on air without maintenance until such time that you can commit.

If you happen to lose 30% on it it's still buttons and will be a much bigger market to flog it onto once you're ready to commit.

Otherwise, plenty of S197 Mustangs will be in budget, by the most mechanically sound one you can find and then you've got the option of a good base to mod it from once funds allow or chop it in.

Autos will be premium spec (all manuals are cloth seats etc) and will still have enough poke to put a grin on your face.

Bit mainstream but someone here in the office has what appears to be a lovely VW Passat with all the options (roof, leather etc). I think he is looking for AED57K. I can ask for more details if of interest.

By all means find out the details.

I can then compare this sensible suggestion with some of the crazier ones listed above, and some of the crazy ones I have been looking at online today!

I have just rented a car for a month, as I am fed up with taxis, and want to do some exploring on my own, so I am covered until 3rd October. Hopefully that will give me enough time to find my own car just before EID.

i'm inclined to agree with mike and go with something for peanuts. you can get a few year old fiesta/tigo for 15k and it'll run and run whilst costing buttons to maintain and you don't need to give a st about where it's parked.

as for cars which hold their value, stick to either the old favourites - pajero/patrol/landcuiser/fj cruiser - or stick to expat family wagons. if it appeals to the school run mum, has been well maintained and brit owned then it will sell on easily.

the safe/interesting bet would either be the ubiquitous stang or a hot hatch. golfs sell well, tons of them out there but brit owned/well looked after is always a strong sellign point.

my mate [landrover fan] is selling both family cars to upgrade which should both hold their money.

one is a 3 door manual defender with upgrades to the engine [breathing, intercooler, remap] suspension and wheels. full dealer service history and well priced at 85k

other is a v6 auto lr2. top spec, low kms and full dealer history. he's looking for 45k but has offered it to me for lower before now.

eta this. low kms, well priced, fits the criteria. just needs the headlights renovated.

Fats25 let me know if you have any questions re the F150 Raptor - I got one in January and am loving every minuet of it!

I second what shirt has said, if its just a temp car then anything that you wont lose money on will do. I'd be seriously tempted by a Pajero or Prado they will be useful for the usual Ikea type shopping that usually associated with moving into a new apartment, plus they are a comfy place to be for the day to day commute.

Just out of curiosity - what happens if you don't opt for a roof?

The car will bend in the middle if you open the doors and the devil of a job trying to close them again :-)

So after a bit of consideration - I have ignored all of the advice above, apart from SamNorthy, (you will get to notice this when you meet me) and am thinking about a less than AED 90K FJ Cruiser, hopefully with Full Toyota History, and/or warranty.

I think from the amount I see on the road, these will be easy to move on for not too much loss providing it has the above history, is GCC spec etc etc.

This car will do everything I need it to, whilst I spend the time looking for the permanent cars.

Thoughts?
