Anyone moved to Dubai for wife's job?
Discussion
Wife is senior HR for global company. Offered and accepted a role growing their presence in UAE. It's a great opportunity for her and the next leap in a successful career.
I don't have a career ladder as such. I run a marketing consultancy business in the UK (one man band ltd company) doing front-end strategy/positioning/creative campaigns through ad agencies for mostly for oil & gas, automotive and alcohol. I plan to continue to work for UK clients through my UK ltd company and invoice in the UK – but also see what opportunities there are for me in Dubai once we have our feet on the ground.
My OP was a "I can't be the first/only one following their wife to UAE" type of question. I'm sure there are others and wanted to get first-hand experience of how it works, any thoughts, hints or tips...
For example: I'm wondering if (as the man of the household) I might have issues setting up contracts for utilities, mobile phone, broadband, car leasing and also alcohol licence if I can't prove employment or income in Dubai? Just one question of many.
An option might be for my wife's company to put me on their payroll with a job title (I'll come up with something that sounds cool) and pay me a percentage of her salary so I can show I have UAE income.
Would be great to hear from anyone who is in a similar situation.

Well, at the moment I'm a stay-at-home dad, but not through choice! As a sponsored partner(yourself) you won't be able to do much re the house rental, bills, etc, this will all have to be done in the wife's name, but that's no biggie. As long as the numbers stack-up, it's life as normal.

Sorry for a slight thread hijack, but what fields? I wouldn't want my wife to work out there as we have 3 kids, but I reckon she would love the hot weather!
The sand fields...lots af cattle/gazelle/sheep grazing on sand out here.........or where you just being funny? When you say you wouldn't want your wife to work "out there", do you mean just that, or you wouldn't want your wife to work anywhere?
If she loves hot weather, then she'll be in heaven here, although the current 40+ with silly humidity is not much fun for long, the novelty wears off from the time you've opened the front door to when you get in the car and realise you could do with another shower.
3 kids means 3 lots of school fees, and that is quite a cost. However, personal nannies/maids are as cheap as, so it's not all bad.

RSGulp hello!Me and my wife moved to Dubai for her work, she is recruitment supervisor for an Oil company.
She sponsors my visa so basically I can do anything she can except work in the UAE (oh and get a loan - see below), fortunately I am employed by a company in Singapore and work in Angola so as far as working in Dubai it doesn't effect me.
Utilities - All in wifes name, can be paid by any UAE Card
Mobile phone - Didn't require a visa only copy of passport
Broadband - All in wifes name, can be paid by any UAE Card
Bank Account - Didn't have any issues although required a salary cert from my company saying I was transferring my pay into that account
Bank Loan - I recently found out my bank would not loan to anyone who doesn't work in Dubai, still to look further into this one.
Alcohol licence - Wife has the licence and I am part of her licence so I can also use her card.
Any other questions feel free to PM
Craig
common consensus is to go with your employers' bank, as it makes loan approval and salary transfer easier.
my employer banks with city but i use barclays. reason being i have barclays accounts in the uk and it costs nothing to transfer money between the two. also at the time barclays had the lowest fee structure [most others used to charge even for you drawing money out of their own atms]. i spent a good while comparing the majors before deciding on this.
