Hope that will get your attention. wink

Well after all of the helpful advice on this forum over the past few months, from a potential immigrant to Dubai, I can confirm we are coming out this week to take a look around.

We arrive on Friday May 2nd morning, through Tuesday 6th May morning staying at the Dubai Marina. Already have plans on the Saturday night, and will then be in DIFC on Sunday for lunch at the moment. Those are the only plans so far. Purpose of trip is to get a feel for the place, and to see some housing estates to get an idea on where we will be living and working. We will have a car. No need to do anything touristy, as if it all goes well we will have plenty of time to do this later on. So any must do's whilst we are there?

Date, time and venue for drinks TBD, thinking Sunday night would be a good night for most as would be a school night for those working, thinking either I can move my lunch to later in the day and do DIFC, or leave lunch where it is and do in the Marina in the evening. You need to understand we are not familiar with taxis so not sure how we will work this, as we will not have a designated driver, so the car will stay where it is when we get to the bar, or we will get the bar without car.

The FREE Drinks will probably not last all evening, but I am not shy to put my hand in my pocket and show the gratitude for those that have helped out with valuable advice.

So anyone free?

Anyone free, please suggest a venue?

Thanks

I have just checked and there is no track days running that weekend so that rules out showing you the autodrome. We could go karting Friday / Saturday evening........

Don't worry about the taxis - they're pretty straight and inexpensive. Most of the bars are in landmark buildings so they're well known.

The Marina can be a pig traffic wise early evenings, to the extent where I don't bother going there (or JBR) unless I really have to. I live next to DIFC so if the Sunday thing ends up there, I'd be more than happy to hook up and have a chinwag.

the only thing to know before getting into a taxi is whether you want to turn left side or turn right side?

traffic in jbr/marina is far better than it used to be, largely because they keep closing roads at random so noone bothers going. of course things will be amazing once the super-useful-tram-that-goes-to-all-the-handy-places arrives.

This has Yacht Club happy hours written all over it....

Edit - Which is 2 for 1 on bottled beer 6pm - 8pm and is a pretty awesome place to have a beer as a noobie.

That is a shame. Karting could be fun - but I am a bit to heavy for my lack of ability!

Saturday is the only time we are busy, but Friday could be possible providing we do not get too jetlagged, and catch up on some sleep before then. Would be good to catch up for a chinwag with you though on the possibilities of motorbikes in Dubai, and whether to bring them there, or whether to acquire when we get there.

Played golf a while ago with a guy who works for Systra, he gives it 1 month before someone drives into the tram outside Mag 218

same with the junction by marina mall. rush hour is going to be lots of fun.

the metro i don't mind, people use it. the tram doesn't run between places people live [those poor carless people] and where people work.

i wouldnt mind so much but the speed of work is terrible and totally unneccesary to block so many major roadways at once.

i can't wait until they start on the business bay canal to wipe the smug looks from DIFC residents faces! wink

but back on topic, agree that the yacht club is the best place for a newbie.

You do know I am a Yiddo too? One of the concerns with passport control is my jewish surname, and Spurs shirt! (I'm not actually jewish by the way!).

I apologise in advance for the Mrs being a Scouser. Also for being a Liverpool fan! wink

So where is this located? I guess by the marina? If so - confirm a time, and we will be there.

Good morning folk,

Another brit coming to Dubai, thats always good news.

If you are in the Marina area then the local would have to be Barasti(a board shorts and flip flops beach bar).
If we can confirm the time and date I know of a few other motor mad brits that are always up for meeting other like minded guys. We should definetly go karting, have you guys been to the track in Jebal Ali? Its not the best place in the world but I promise you it is the most fun, just think autocross for karts.

Look forward to meeting you all.

Staying at The Address on the Marina.

The Yacht Club sounds perfect, as the Mrs likes the sound of that, and I need to make sure she is happy on this trip, so it all happens long term!

Am I correct in assuming from the above that flip flops and shorts are not acceptable for this place? If so what is appropriate dress?

Name a time, and we will see some of you there.

Thanks

Pretty much walking distance from hotel then.

Shorts used to be allowed, not now I think.

Otherwise anything goes, jeans, trainers, 'slacks', black tie whatever takes ya fancy.

I'll just check with swmbo that she's headed home from work on Sun so I'm absolved from dog walking, if so, I'll be there 6 latest.

Ok that sounds like the first confirmation, so we will be there from 18:00 on Sunday.

See anyone there that can make it.
