So, there's a slight chance that I'll end up in Dubai, nothing set in stone but a whiff of employment prospect that came out of the blue. Surprisingly the missus is willing to consider it and I've missed breaking jeeps in the desert so even if it doesn't come off this time it's still worth considering for us.

I've done a bunch of 3 month stints and my folks lived out there for the better part of 10 years until a few years back. It's been a while, basically.
So, Dubai being the ever-changing sprawling metropolis, what's new other than DEWA taking eyes out, the rents and traffic fines getting silly etc?

If it comes off I'll be relocating with the missus and step-son from the US. They're yanks, I'm a Brit. Of primary concern is a good school (he's 12 and this is his last year of sprogdom before big school) - any pointers here?
I'll save the in-depth questions for Google, but is the visa situation still the same for wives and kids - I move over, they come later and do Oman visa runs on a tourist visa until permy status is granted?

Mainly I'm just nebby and want to know what I've missed out on in the few years it's been, and whether it's for the better or worse.

Visa runs still fine, a colleague took his wife and kid up to the border last week.

When were you last here? Can't think of anything mahor though tbh.

Visa runs? Eh?

I got my visa within 5 days of changing company (AUH to DXB so may as well be a new arrival) and theirs came about a week later.

Probably around 2007/2008. I've done a couple of quick trips since but not more than a few days.

Very much 'same old' on a day to day / living basis then? I'm forever hearing from those who've come back that it's not what it used to be etc, which I'm assuming is partly sour grapes and partly people just craving change. I've always loved the place, but being a while I figured it would have changed a fair bit.
